Wasn't it Ford who ran a Focus for 100k miles with Mobile One oil in ?. When they drained it and inspected the engine it was like new.

I bet they didn't do that with a new car fresh off the production line (or, more to the point, a new engine fresh off the line). There's a lot less swarf in a modern engine than there used to be, and oil filters are a lot more effective too. But the first oil change is still the one that matters most.

Tilt - what he's saying is how can the OP prove to the dealer they were not provided with a service book. The dealer will just say the owner has lost it.

I've a friend with a 2010 Fiesta diesel econetic. There is definitely a service warning that comes on. His came on whilst on the motorway and it actually spelled out words to the effect of 'Change/Check Oil'. He immediately pulled into the next services thinking the oil level was too low but it was fine and all it was was a warning that look at the mileage travelled advising of an oil service being due.

So what was the actual fault? It sounds form the way they approached it that it may have been an oil cooler failure, leading to a warped head as everything got very hot very fast - it's a bit difficult to mistake a leaking head joint for a leaking oil cooler!

If that's the case then the warranty doesn't really come into it because the service would have made no difference and an oil cooler that fails dramatically at less than a year old isn't of merchantable quality / fit for purpose so the OP's statutory rights should cover it.

May take a bit of a fight, but they can't, by law, impose their warranty, or its conditions, in lieu of statutory protection (although they'll try hard to). Worth having a word with Trading Standards once you know what the "original" fault was.

Just to add that VAG vehicles can be placed on 18K or 2 year service intervals.

Almost all Lease / Fleet companies place their cars on these "type" of service intervals.

If ford offer something similar (which i expect they do) it should have been discussed with the customer and also stamped in the book by the dealer.

I've yet to have a single car go "pop" based on using the above criteria in more than a decade of this sort of motoring.

It is patently horlicks that the car should have failed so catastrophically because an Oil and Filter change wasn't performed on a 1 year / 12K mile service interval.

I'm not surprised they want to weasel out of it, as it seems to be the norm, but it is absurd of them to suggest a service would have prevented this failure as described.

Unless it's changed since I owned one, it's "up to" 18K miles. There's a bunch of sensors and if you drive the car in a distance commuter style (they recommend 25 miles per day, open road) then the service interval might stretch out that far.

But it's all written into the warranty, the service schedule and the specification. But just because you can stretch the service intervals on some VAGs out to 18K (it isn't, or wasn't, available for all the engines) doesn't mean you can for an arbitrary Ford.

After 18K, anything other than the most exotic oil will have degraded significantly, especially on a new car. Checking the level is good practice, but oil doesn't just have to be in there, it has to be fresh enough to be doing its job.

many cars have 20000 mile intervals between services so not sure I agree with you.

I have decided not to bother fighting the warranty any longer (you have all made pretty valid points and echo alot of what Ford have been saying) just sitting and awaiting the call to let me know how much money I have to part with. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and share opinions everyone has been more than helpful :)

i wouldnt give up, It may be partly your fault (well mostly) but there are some errors by the dealer, not giving you a manual, and not explaining service schedules on purchase.

I would bypass the dealer and go direct to Ford. it wont cost you anything

I know. Several people keep telling me not to give up and the service would not have stopped this happening even another ford garage have said it is ridiculous and warranty should cover a mechanical fault but the person that mention voiding the warranty by not getting it serviced did have a valid point and Ford would stick to that. It has been a month already and still no further forward. I still think it was something smaller like oil cooler like first stated then they run the car or something and caused the "other" problem. Why would they say it was that then fix it and lie to me saying warranty never OKd that and then suddenly that is not what the problem was. I know they have been running and moving the car alot as its sat outside often and the other side of the large forecourt. I was told not to run it as would cause more damage so how come they are allowed to be driving it around? Im confused I feel stupid, I am stupid. I should know more about my car and cars in general I should understand. But I am sorry I dont and I know that sounds really ignorant. I don't feel I can fight it or have a leg to stand on any longer. I just want it fixed now lol

you have nothing to lose by going to ford direct and asking how an engine of 18000 miles can fail so dramatically you could also try trading standards as they have mechanics that could inspect for you any thing is worth a go you just never know

If you don't ask they wont offer

Agreed. We have at least two of those vehicles at home - one being an Audi S8 the other a BMW X5 - I have never owned a car that has to be serviced every 12 000 miles and hope I never have to ! Both of these vehicles have Longlife variable services and average about 20 000 miles / 2 years before the service light comes on. The BMW's oil cooler popped in the winter of 2010 and BMW had no quibble about fully covering it under warranty - at that stage the car had done about 35K miles, had only had an Oil Service and Insp 1 and is only due its Insp 2 now, on 64K miles, having had a Brake Fluid change every two years.

BMW's warranty was great and they have also offered a goodwill repair in the past on something not covered by the warranty (car is now 8 years old!) but I guess you get what you pay for with cars and main dealers, even though no-one should have to spend thousands and be ripped off like this Ford dealer is doing.

OP, hope you do find the motivation to contact Ford Head Office with your independent report - the dealer sounds like a right shower. :(

I've an 18 month old Fiesta Zetec petrol which has done 22k miles. It appears to depend on which model you have as our car definitely didn't have a warning light come on and it was serviced at just over 12,500 miles, as recommended by Ford (do you not have a service sticker above the driver's visor? ).

However, I believe the first service for most Fiestas is just an oil change & we were quoted over £200 for service at a main dealer. I used the local "Rapid Fit" which has Ford trained technicians but much cheaper prices. It cost me £125 for the first service and they quoted £175 for a major service (25k miles).

I'd be fighting Ford tooth and nail to get them to cover the costs of your repair. I'm of the opinion though that there shouldn't really be anything major going wrong with a car within the first two years!
