I swear around the children but they don't use swear words.. they understand the difference between words which are acceptable for children and words which are not.

Though DS1 did come home from nursery with a few choice words not used in my house.

I LOVE swearing around people who don't like it.. the look on their face is priceless... so of course it is done all the more.

I am well behaved and respectful when we go to OH's mums, she doesn't like swearing so I don't swear in her house.. her house her rules, but when she comes to mine I do.. my house my rules!

The best word for offending others is the C word.. so we have a daily quota.. :D One use per person per day, and can be stacked for maximum effect when required. Most words do have a very base level meaning so aren't that offensive really.. C*** being vagina (and the reason the book Lady Chatterleys Lover' was banned for so long)... but it seems a bit strange calling someone a vagina.. though I have done lol

I dont know if it is just me but I hate hearing people swearing, especially so when there are children around. I had the joy of the weekly shop in Asda this morning and could not believe the language a mum was using with her very young child. He could not have been more than about 5, was playing her up something rotten and her responses to this had people literally stopping in the aisles with their mouths open.

    What are your views?

I'm afraid this sort of thing is par for the course especially in school holidays. It's always amazed me that parents find it so difficult to manage their children's behaviour 1:1 but teachers are expected to manage 1:30 without any swearing, slapping etc. If they did they would be disciplined. Ironically, those same parents would probably be up in arms if their child's teacher swore.

The line I've always taken with children swearing (which they inevitably will when they hear it at home) is that I know those words too but choose not to use them at school and they must learn to do the same. Just think about all the stars and footballers who swear with abandon but manage to hold it together when interviewed.

I think there is a small distinction between swearing per se and swearing at someone but it's not much. I swear occasionally for expression but generally I think it's lazy speech, habit, lack of control and often done for effect by those who need to bolster their egos.

Why? Were you brought up with awful manners, or was it something you acquired later? :(

  • The odd eff, bas****, shi*e, or p*ss used occasionally when very stressed or angry, is acceptable, but it's knowing when not to use these words even then that is the crux of this, it's called manners and consideration.

Now words like (k)n** head and that c word are NEVER ok. I feel so sad when I hear women using these expressions, it really sickens me.

I sincerely hope that Pigpen's post was a wind-up. No-one could be that trashy.

My parents relaxed a bit once we were teenagers. They aren't foul mouthed, but they don't faff about saying sugar if they stub their toe!

Same here. We weren't 'allowed' to swear but they didn't mind if we said it because we'd hurt ourselves or something. My dad is accident prone so things like toe stubbing were mostly when I heard him swear! Ivd only said the f word a couple of times in front of them either when I've been really annoyed about something or it slipped out by accident. I swear a lot with DH but ive picked up his way of swearing like breathing thing as that's what it was like when he was in the forces. So I reign it in around other people.

But I never swear AT someone.

I think doing it at a child is just disgusting.

I swear occasionally. If I have hurt myself I am not going to stand there and sugar coat it. Sometimes it is just a natural reaction. If I am with friends then it is used in a jokey fashion, though nothing overly offensive and we dont do this if we are in a public place. I dont see that as appropriate.

Swearing at children is unacceptable in my opinion. When I have seen it done I cringe. The adult seems angry and impatient and the kids tend to take no notice of what is being asked of them. If someone swore at me to get me to do something I would ignore them too.
