Just to join in here - to those suggesting that an RBS account would be a no-no because of NatWest - not the case it seems.

I had a (very) disputed account with NatWest where I had a large amount of charges refunded due to bank error plus compo but it still left a smallish debit which I paid off gradually through various debt collection agencies. Just after I paid it off I applied for a current account with RBS, which was approved. It's a Select account, which I use for general spends after my bills have been paid from my Barclays Cash Card account. The balance is anywhere between 400-1000 depending on what I'm paid and now has a couple of DD's, for my internet and my mobile. Its been run fine for the year or so I've had it, no issues.

However, NatWest have pretty much said that i would never be eligable to bank with them again in any capacity, and when I questioned well what about my RBS account the guy said they just are part of the same group, otherwise their systems are not connected in any way, they dont 'talk' to each other and I cannot do anything to do with my RBS account in a NatWest branch. I dont have an overdraft (suits me fine - evil things) but I've got a Visa Debit card and a cheque book. And this was with multiple (I'm talking about 10) defaults.

For customer-facing purposes they are different banks. However behind the scenes they are pretty much the same and some members of staff will certainly work for both Natwest and RBS. If they've told you that you can't bank with the RBS Group and some time in the future RBS needs to investigate your account (for whatever reason), they may see Natwest gave you the boot and act accordingly. ;)

Ah if they did it wouldnt be the end of the world. :p Tis not my main account and I've got another account with the Halifax. They just said I couldnt bank with NatWest, they said there was nothing to stop RBS offering me an account (as they have)

I've had my NatWest select account open now since March 2012, always have my salary paid into the account and I have 5 defaults and 1 CCJ. also have a cheque book but no overdraft, I suspect I may have a credit marker against the account but I suspect when my CCJ drops off next year it will automatically get removed?

I went bankrupt 5 years ago and I was having problems with the RBS as they froze my account then shut my account down during my process of bankruptcy. I was able to open a Co-operative cash minder account straight away which gave me a debit card and direct debit facilities. This is the best bank I have ever been with.

I'm going to try Co-Op as I've heard good things about them. To be honest NatWest basically screwed me over for 4 weeks anyway so I'm not that worried, I just hope they've not put a CIFAS marker against my name - why they would have I don't know - but I also don't know why they had frozen my accounts for 4 weeks!
  • Did you get your CIFAS info. (or hopefully lack-of) back?
  • No update?

When I went into the branch yesterday and spoke to the manager in private he said that the banks won't give information to one another, they look at the credit files and use that info. .

Not much of a bank manager then, then again these days they are nothing more than sales/staff managers. He clearly does not fully understand how some of the internal fraud departments work.
Talking to other banks is a daily task.

I bet the bank are just not happy with the feeds they are receiving from the CRAs.

Going on what has been said previously it sounds to me if the original application has slipped through the net and it was accepted when possibly it should have been declined.
