Just go in and say that you've lost the books and they were from a few years ago and ask what you can do. I'm sure they'll be nice about it and at most charge you the RRP, but to be honest I think they'll just reactivate your account. They'll be happy that you want to start using the library again.

I work in a library and we charge the RRP of the book plus an admin fee. It's not a massive amount. We either charge for a replacement book or the fines if the book is found, but not both. Don't be tempted to buy a replacement book as it means the staff will have to process it which won't earn you any brownie points. If I were you I would just go into the library and apologise profusely and state your case. We are not ogres! If your record still exists be prepared for the fact that a note may be put on your card just as a record in case you do the same thing again. If you behave yourself in future it won't be a problem.

The wonderful mutt has eaten 3 library books (though I was embarressed to admit it the 3rd time and just told them I'd left it on the train!) and in each case I've just had to pay what it would cost to buy the book on amazon.

Many moons ago I found library books that belonged to a different county's library and had obviously got packed up when we moved from years ago.

I just sent them back through the post and hope and pray I never move back into that county

They will have cancelled your cards by now so will have no record and the books will be written off.

I used to work in a library and we charged the RRP, councils are desperately trying to increase the number of readers so should welcome you back.

(always thought the RRP was a bit unfair really as they will get a massive discount on purchases but that was the policy)

i did the same, my friend was one of the librarians and she said they wrote them off after 3 years, she checked for me and as there was no record of me or even the books so as i had lost my card she rejoined me - she said it happened all the time

Thanks for your help :) could be anything from nothing to £1000 so obviously it's different in different areas.

I moved house near the time, I think that is how they became lost!

I will ask the tomorrow I think

Yes but the children want to use the library again :)

OH said we could get married so I'd have a different name... Which seems a bit extreme :o

Plus I can hear him now...

"she only married me for a library card" :rotfl:

I can think of worse reasons!:)

The kids would have their own cards hun so don't deny them the pleasure of visiting the library.
hmmm - haven't you changed your address at all since er, losing the books? hint?
