library fines

Before we start, please don't judge me!

I have had some books out of the library for rather a long time (seven years ) both adult and child titles. Books have disappeared and I don't know where to.

I would like to sort this out and just wondering what will be the fine due?

Is it just paying the rrp of the book or will there be a cumulative fine as well?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it would simply be the RRP of the book - I have lost books before and have just had to pay that, not the 'late fees'.

Sometimes libraries have an amnesty day when books can be returned free of fines. Failing that, you usually pay the RRP when you lose the book.

Some will also let you replace like for like so if you can find it cheap on amazon or a charity shop you can take it in, but you'd need to talk with the library assistant to see if they have this policy.

Yes but the children want to use the library again :)

OH said we could get married so I'd have a different name... Which seems a bit extreme :o

Been there done that - paid the invoice. Then went home having searched the house about a zillion times for the book before paying for it... and there it was.

So I went back with it and they gave me my money back in return for the book. And waived the fine, too. :D

Our library also doesn't charge children under 16 fines on overdue books, CDs and CD-ROMs.

Are you 100% sure you still have the book as I've also found a lost book on the library shelf where it hadn't been checked in correctly and I knew I had returned it!

Most councils cap library fines at around £1000. Mine used to not charge for overdue books taken out on a children's ticket, but the youth round my way is so delinquent and criminal they had to start charging. Apparently they've managed to swell the council's coffers by 8000% since they started collecting fees on overdue kids' books :D

I had a simliar problem but think it was only 2-3 years :j

Went to the libary with my mum and got a new libary card nothing was said...they had no record of us being on the system.

Id play dumb and pay the RRP book price if it comes up.

Yikes! I think it depends on your local council and how strict they are. I belong to 2 different libraries, as I live on the border of 2 counties. One lot are quite easy going and the other lot are sticklers for charging fines.

Have you been receiving letters about the overdue books?

The only thing I can think of is if you have perhaps moved house in that time? You could join the library again, provide proof of your new address and hope they don't recognise you! Bit naughty, I shouldn't advise this really, but there is a small chance they might charge you fines AND the cost of replacing the books, I'm afraid. :(

Wouldn't they have been written off as lost by now?
