She has plenty of ID - credit cards, utility bills and Inland Revenue tax notification etc, but none of this is acceptable without an original bank statement.

Credit card doesnt identify anything. Utility bills and inland revenue tax notification are acceptable and some of the most common things used.

Thanks for the reply dunstonh. So do you think it is sensible that RBS insist on a paper bank statement when so many people bank online these days?

Thinking about it - A&L don't give me paper statements at all, so if that was my only bank I would be a bit stuffed.

I opened my tesco savings account with a gas bill, a credit card bill and an online printoff of the paperfree bank account I want to associate the tesco account with. Oh, and a £10 cheque drawn on the online account. I added a note that I dont have paper statements as I opted out.

Problem is now the council who want original bank statements for my housing benefit renewal. I've done the same, just printed one off, they will either accept or not, they did last year as I pointed out to them in my covering note.
It's so hard lately to prove that you are who you say you are.

So it's back to paper bank statements for us.

Yes, I'm in the same boat. There are four of us, all being "green" and protecting the environment by going paperless until bloody ML regulations came along. So it's back to paper statements for all of our accounts - I only keep the most recent and shred the rest.

What makes me angry about all this is that: 1. My dd opened an account recently with the Co-operative Bank and wasn't asked for any ID. Presumably they used Experian. If the Co-op can do this why can't all the other banks do the same and save us all the hassle? 2. My wife has been a customer with the RBS for 10 years and now she has to prove where she lives.

The application form states that an "Original" bank statement is required. We phoned the helpline to query this and were told that there was no alternative. They were adamant that they would not accept an online printout. gem4 - did you just take a chance and you were accepted?

Hi FredBear, yes I just sent the printout regardless with a post-it note on saying that I had opted out of paper statements and all my accounts were online. I did send a credit card statement also, although I dont see what use it would have except for my address.......and that was what the gas bill did. I suppose sending the cheque for initial deposit went halfway to proving it was my account but I really dont know. Tesco are supposed to be advocating 'green-ness' so it would have been a bit ironic if they refused my 'green' bank statement. They accepted it anyway and opened my savings account today.

Just a quick point for all those who bank online - you can usually request a paper statement free of charge when banking online, so give that a go.

Online statements can be fine if they print out looking like a statement. The confusion possibly comes from the past when you couldnt accept cashpoint or counter "mini" statements (and still cant).

Some issuers allow you to print a statement that actually looks like a proper printed statement as if it arrived in the post. Others look like a print screen and don't contain address details or statement number. I wouldn't accept the latter but no problem with the former.
