Help needed for proof of address!

Since 15th Apr I have been trying to open a hisave Savings account with one major problem......They need a proof of address.

They list bank statements, utility bills etc but there lies the snag

My Bank accounts (Nationwide,Halifax and A&L) are all on line
My Phone contract is online
The house is not mine so neither are the utility bills

The same problem today with icesave.

Any help greatly appreciated!

If you have a bank account with Nationwide but don't get paper statements, then you can change this. Log on, go to your Flex account and click on Preferences. Then click on the Paperless tab and click the radio button to get paper and online statements.

Also you may recently have received statements of interest paid in the last tax year. If you have and they include your address, I would think these could be used.

How about a council tax bill or even a credit card statement - good luck

I have a similar problem proving my wife's ID when opening accounts, my wife does not have a full driving licence nor passport and all of the household bills are in my name, I even went as far as getting her a provisional driving licence with photograph only to find that they insist on a full licence for ID, god knows why she needs a full licence to open an account she does not even have to drive to the bank for an online account!

IMHO these ID and address requirements are useless, it makes it damn difficult for genuine honest people yet the scammers and money launderers can easily get around the rules.

Perhaps if we all had ID cards it might make things a little easier.
  • Thanks for all that, will be changing to statements off the nationwide again.

In the mean time I have requested a copy of a statement (for a price obviously) as have money burning a hole in my account above the £2500 thresehold of Halifax.

If only they looked at the electoral roll!!

I wish they looked at electoal roll too. I was a bit nervous about sending bank statement , driving licence copy and opening cheque to ICESAVE in one envelope(all that id in one place) so am sending them in separate envelopes on diff days.

You mention having phone and bank accounts online. Is it possible to print something off (your account details plus recent statement) and produce that as proof of ID? Presumably you still have to send these documents thru' the post? I dunno cos I'm wary of internet banking...
  • unfortunately not, they will only take real statements. Just requested one from Halifax for a £5 pound fee..........Thank the lord for matched betting or I might of complained about that!!

Some banks use electorol roll (as secondary method) ie Halifax adviser can search. but not everyone can

Halifax also take provisional licences (cards is fine for that and full), but many places do not

I have queried with various banks on several occasions their need for specific identity documentation as my understanding is that bank managers have to power to exercise discretion in certain cases where the individuals do not possess any of the normal documents. But yes, I know this means being able to speak direct to your bank manager which is a near impossibility given their lousy Indian Call Centre customer service facilities. But a tax code document, state benefits notification can be accepted, and one bank did accept my monthly pension statement so sometimes it's just a matter of accessing a more senior person in the bank than the counter clerk who has a little more common sense or a few more brain cells.
