ESA disability premium

  • Hi - I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me.

    I was medically retired from my job in April this year (2014) and for the first time in 37 years had to start claiming benfits.

    Well, what a shambles - the criteria for benefits is just so confusing and i guess many people just give up trying to get around all the "brick walls" that are placed before you. Its a disgrace IMHO !

    However, I'm not one who gives up and just want to make sure that I get what i'm entitled to.

    I need help with Income related ESA payments during the assessment phase; this is what I was placed on mid March and its just ended having failed the medical assessment.

    my circustances are as follows;

    My wife does not work and receives DLA at the highest rate for both components.

    Last week I was awarded PIP at the standard rate for both compnents backdated to Feruary 2014

    I was awarded Carers allowance (looking after my wife) 2nd May 2014 and did not recieve anything as my ESA payments were greater so, therefore had an underlying entitlement.

    As already stated, Income related ESA payments started March 2014 and at that time we had no other income at all until the end of May 2014 when I started to receive my ill health pension of £100 per week. I have received the full Housing benefit and CTR throughout

    I need someone to explain exactly what weekly payments I should have been receiving (I have found the benefit Calculators to be fairly misleading and the two come up with differing results ! ) ;

    1) March 2014 when income related ESA started to 1st May 2014

    2) 2nd May 2014 when I had an underlying entitlement to Careaers allowance to 30th May 2014

    3) 31st May 2014 when I started receiving £100 per week pension to mid august when my Income related ESA ended.

    Thank you in advance to anyone out there who know how all these premiums work and is prepared to take the time to help me - its just that having only just been awarded PIP I suspect I owed a back payment and want to know what this might amount to.
    You should start a new thread for your query so that people who know their stuff will see a new thread and answer it. It will get lost tagged onto the end of an old thread.

    Just copy and paste your original text into a new thread.

    Is your wife claiming ESA as well as DLA?

    That is a bit weird. I get £184.80 ESA a week so is this income related ESA with the severe disability premium on top?

    £184.80 would be income based ESA support group with severe disability premium and enhanced disability premium included

    You should have either an award letter or an uprating letter telling you on last page what it comsists of. Mine states £113.70 ESA couple; £35.75 Support group & disability income guarantee of £22.35 - making my IR esa £171.80/week. You should have that on one of the above.
    I think NT is correct - Your letter will/should say: £72.40 ESA + £35.75 Support group + £15.55 EDP + £61.10 SDP = £184.80.

    i havent has an award letter or uprating letter for 18 months now ....
    i never received the benefit rise letter in feb/march, nor a letter telling me i had been reassessed for ESA ( without an ESA50) and placed in the support group in january or a letter awarding me the devere disability premium and the amount of backdated payments!
    its only because i know a little about ESA that i realised what was happening ( i did phone for comfirmation).
    they really dont seem to willingly tell me anything!

    If you're on income based ESA, you should get the enhanced disability premium added automatically.

  • Thanks for the reply, I do claim ESA income based the only thing what I can not understand is that it says you have to live alone but I live with my mum does that count?

    No. You won't get the severe disability premium as you live with your mum. Unless she's registered blind, receives either daily living rate of PIP, receives mid or high rate care DLA or receives attendance allowance.

    You're probably already getting it, EDP, you should be getting £123.70 a week
    You can't get SDP as you live with your mother, except if she is herself getting something, as mentioned in post above mine.
