Although I can't find the reference just now, TM certainly use to charge for a change in payment method, so there is a risk there. I experienced this in the past with them when I changed bank accounts, although they eventually cancelled the charge. I'm not sure if the payment method also forms part of the contract. If it does then TM will jump on the fact.
There are no risks involved by continuing paying by DD, you are covered by the guarantee so they can't take any more than an authorised amount, and your bank will deal with it.
There was a non DD charge added to my last bill, (about £4 as I recall). It was credited back when the refund was processed.
I wasn't going to give them the chance of trying to take £400+ and then sit on it for 30 days, and cancelling the DD and paying by card is definitely acceptable under the T&Cs when in genuine dispute.====0 -

Although oddly enough, I received another email from the Executive Office at 7.23pm last night, so two hours after the latest MSE article, saying they were arranging the Bacs payment and I should receive the refund in the next 3 working days. A vast improvement on 14 working days, but they still haven't complied with the CISAS decision, so still telling on them0 -

I forgot to say that a DD is initiated by the company collecting it, so if you cancel a DD there's nothing stopping them setting it up again. A DD is under their control, that's why there's a guarantee. It's unlike a Standing Order which needs you to initiate payment.0 -
d123 - can they still process the Bacs refund if the DD's cancelled? Thinking of doing this, as my next payment (including termination charge) is due next week. TM told me the account's been closed and the charge removed, but I can still access my account and the charge is still showing.

Anna, before telling on them can you check whether TM have notified CISAS? They should tell them that they have complied, and it wouldn't surprised me if they claim they have.
Yes, they can still organise a Bacs payment.0 -

I wonder if TM are saying that your case is too complex for CISAS - don't think they'll win that one
Good luck!0 -

Yes, I can confirm this, DD cancelled and the BACS payment still arrived.I forgot to say that a DD is initiated by the company collecting it, so if you cancel a DD there's nothing stopping them setting it up again. I was taught exactly the opposite, and experience with DDs would back up my understanding of them.
A DD cannot be reinstated without the authority of the customer (and T-Mobile always worked that way, they would never reinstate without authority, whether in writing or verbal).====0 -

With a reputable company yes, but remember we're dealing with T-Mobile.
I was answering with a direct knowledge of the T-Mobile procedures, I doubt they would have recently changed something as basic as DD rules (no matter how crap they have become).
Setting up a DD without authorisation would lead to disciplinary action, and it couldn't be done without leaving a footprint on the customers account (some accounts were mandatory DD, if the customer cancelled the DD they had to be chased with endless letters and phone calls and be threatened they would lose their discount if they didn't reinstate it before their next bill).====0
