In a bid to calm down the stupid spaniel we've been told to try hypoallergenic dog food.
What is the cheapest / best way of buying this please as we have 2 of them to feed
Thanks x

Most dog food manufacturers do a hypoallergenic version, so its just a matter of finding one to suit and then finding the cheapest supplier.
If you are in a rural area try the agricultural suppliers, they are often the cheapest and will usually pricematch.
I currently use this:

It seems to be one of the best at a reasonable price.
Don't just change the food though. You must also be careful with treats and make sure they are hypoallergenic too.
Also do not give them any leftovers that include any processed food or anything with additives (ie, if you do give them left overs, then only plain meat or veg).

Would you consider a raw diet?
Tends to work out cheaper.
Otherwise I use Barking Heads. It is expensive but the ingredients are superb and would likely change your dog's behaviour.
Do not go for Working Dog Food or Bakers or Pedigree as that is where the problems start!
If you wanted to use a supermarket food either Chappie or Butchers is supposed to be a better quality (but by no means the best!)0 -

Really wouldn't advise using a working dog food to calm a dog down. They have extra carbohydrates in them which means more energy! I don't think OP's dog is being worked otherwise they wouldn't be wanting a calmer dog.0 -
I buy Royal Canin vet diet from Pet Meds and I think it works out really reasonably.0

I feed the salmon and rice variant of Skinners Field and Trial to my middle aged, non working, never have worked lurcher and whippet and it actually has less calories than the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Veterinary Diet.
My whippet has gut problems and I asked her Referral Vet (who is a Professor of Internal Veterinary Medicine at Nottingham University) what he thought of the quality of this food and he was more than happy for her to go back onto it instead of the much more expensive prescription food. We have to be very careful with her diet as we're trying to balance the needs of kidney disease, pancreatitis and IBD so it wasn't a snap decision and he went away and studied the nutritional content very carefully.
I know it's marketed as a working dog food, but the Skinners is much more comparable to the likes of Burns Complete than a full on Working complete.

I would agree to go for the Skinners Field and trial range too although I would only use the Duck & Rice, Salmon & Rice or Turkey & Rice I don't think the other are hypoallergenic plus IMHO the ingredients aren't as good either.
They really are excellent quality & value for the price.
I definitely wouldn't worry about them being a working dog food as the protein levels etc should be fine for most pet dogs."Things can only get better.................c/o D:Ream #The 90's"

Hi
My dogs really suffered on most other well known brand dog foods, one had mucky ears the other was itching and chewing her feet. So i went on a hunt for an affordable hypoallergenic dog food. I came across this website
puregoldpetfood
Mine have been on the large breed chicken and rice and the fish with allergy x and i havent looked back. Even better they do free delivery and the service is quick.
Hope this helps others.0 -
Have you had any blood tests done to find out exactly what your spaniel is allergic to? If you haven't it's going to be very difficult to find a food that suits, tbh. A fellow member of a springer forum has had great results with her springer feeding Dave and Barney's but she'd had the tests done, so knew what she needed to avoid.
What are you feeding currently, how old and what type of spaniel do you have and how and how long are you exercising?Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0
