Trust me .... no amount of money would do that. Not now I have made my decision
See, you are now absolutely convinced you've done the right thing! I suspect at the time of your very first post here you might have clutched at this as a straw! You will find other things to do (paid employment or self employment - or just new downsized life) and with all the advice on here it'll be a breeze! Working at something you hate is never worth the stress. Good Luck!Resolution:

Hi Muppet81:hello:
Well first congratulations for moving out into the light! because that is what it will feel like in time. I was stuck in an awful job, with awful people who made my life rather unpleasant and there was no way out - we needed my money to live on. I wish I'd been able to quit because it cost me alot to stay. However after a year or so I got another job and moved on and achieved (modestly admitting this honest!) rather good things. I've grown and thrived ever since. I now wonder why I put up with it (because we needed the money but even so)
The people who were so awful to me can't look me in the eye now. They know what they did and they have to live with it not me.
Yep it's scarey taking that big step into the unknown but its surprising how much you can do without, and more importantly its surprising just how much unnecessaries you buy when you're deeply unhappy.
Actually I quite envy you right now! I wouldn't want the worries but the chance of a blank canvas and new choices and opportunities - I'm jealous! Get out there and if a job doesn't turn up quickly get yourself enrolled on a course.
But much more importantly you're 50 - that's not old but it is alot of working years behind you, don't you think perhaps you're entitled to a few weeks break???:D0 -
I have had so much really useful advice and must say that I feel more positive today.
I have asked the Job Centre to send me an application for a job working in a local kennels and I have an appointment with a recruitment agency in the morning who hopefuly will get me a few days of temping work. Not being a typist may be a drawback but if anyone wants someone to sit at a desk and say hello and take messages etc. then I am you woman.
OH and I sat and looked through all your responses and advice last night and it helped us both focus on our situation. He was really impressed with how you had all rallied round me.
I have enrolled on Pigsback and I am already up to £1.85 and was able to get one of you 500 pigsback points for referring me. It was nice to able to give something back.
I will sort out and post a SOA as was suggested and you could perhaps all give me your opinions on that.
I am just off to make a tomato base for some homemade pizzas for tonight.
Good luck to all of those of you who told me about the difficult situations you were also in and I hope things improve for you. I would love to hear if they do
Thanks again and i will let you all know how my job hunt and budgeting goes.

but heck this life is not a dress rehearsal, is it?

OMG
Thanks balmaiden. You've just helped me to stop stressing myself over things. That's soooooo true.
I'm 27, am the main wage earner and am due to have baby 2 in Aug and really want to go part time afterwards. I've been worrying about money and what people will think of me 'abandoning' a good wage. But why should I worry what other people think? This is MY life not theirs and I need to do this for DS1 too as I feel I need to get to grips with his diabeties better for his sake, and you know this is his life not a dress rehersal and what I do now may improve his life later.
Sorry to hijack the thread there, piece said and all that. It was just one of those moments where you read a comment and you're dumbstruck with how darned obvious it is, but you've never seen it that way
Thanks balmaiden for inadvertantly making me realise what's truely important, and it ain't work

Another few thoughts.... not sure how well stocked your home is for home baking stuffs, but if you're looking at making pizzas you may be able to get a Nread Maker off off your local freecycle
When you post your SOA, can you pop a link in here so we can nip over to it?April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -

Hi Muppet.
I haven't read all the posts in full, so forgive me if someone has suggested this already. If you are a bit of a cook, have you thought about cooking for your local Country Market (used to be WI Markets), don't know where you are based but they do have a website. I used to do this, and although it won't pay the mortgage, it brings in a few extra quid every month, and I met the fabbest most interesting women ever. I don't know what kind of person you are, or what you like, I work from home as a Nail Technician and it suits me just fine, the hours fit around the kids, I meet lovely people, and the money's not bad once you are up and running. A friend of mine got made redundant and started up a business as a doggy day care, looking after and walking dogs for people who are out during the day. Or childminding if you are a child friendly person?
Anyway, chin up, it sounds like you have made the right move, life's too short to work for a miserable horrible boss.Friday April 9th 2010 the day I become Mrs Jones!

Hi Muppet,
My guess is that working for the horrible boss has worn you down and made a hefty dint in your self esteem. Once you get over this hump you will get it back. However, it will be a big contributor as to why you are feeling so wretched and think all is hopeless.
It may be that initially you will work for minimum wage as a temp, but I have two friends - both over 50 when they started - who began work as temps and now are permanent and on reasonable money.
If you really, really want to work and are prepared to do anything (legal of course) then there is cleaning which you can start within days. But, I don't think it will come to that. You have a good work record and you will be surprised at the number of employers who prefer people over 50. They don't spend the weekends clubbing and come in with hangovers or throw sickies, they don't spent hours a day texting under the desk and having endless mobile calls.
Round Crawley, many employers do not take permanent staff but have temps and then offer them permanent when they see they can do the work. You did the right thing. Working for a pig is soul destroying as it doesn't just affect the eight hours a day you spend at work but also the hours at home as you dread each morning. This situation affects your health, it is not worth risking that. It will be interesting to see if other people leave the company.
Get the slap on and get out there.;)0 -
Just an update to all of you who were kind enough to give me advice and suppost in my dark hour .... I have just had an interview with a newish business which has just opened a small office in my village.
Saw an advert in the post office window and thought this could be fate.
Brilliant hours and 5 minutes from home .....
I really do want the job and it seems it is between me and another applicant who is on holiday and they can't see till next week. Please will you all cross your fingers for me in the meantime. I know this will help.
Must try not to get my hopes up too much in the meantime.
In the meantime, though I am working on putting all your great OS moneysaving tips to work in order to make ends meet.Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
Crossing everything for you muppet, though I'm sure you don't need it - you sound lovely in your posts and any employer would be daft not to snap you up!
Keep us posted won't you?
