Can't be bothered to read all the posts so sorry if this has been repeated.

It's a numbers game....and it really is as simple as that.

You have to keep going, and when you feel like giving up, just keep going! (a little bit like you do on here).

You need to make sure that you have done the following:

    1. Registered with all the local job agencies for FT & PT work
    2. Also register for temping to help get some experience under your belt
    3. Register with the job centre and go there at least twoie a week and print off any jobs that may suit.
    4. Do daily web searches on the job centre website (is it still worktrain.gov?)
    5. Get the local papers and scour them each week and apply for everything that moves.
    6. Sharpen up your CV
    7. Go and see the careers office at University and drop in weekly for updates/encouragement and for job adverts.
    8. Mostly.....lose the chip. You are not going to get a job until you do.

Stop thinking up ridiculous excuses as to why you can't do particular jobs. You don't sound nearly as disabled as you would try and have some of us believe sometimes. Your small mind is actually the biggest disabilty that you possess.

Apply for bloody everything. Give anything a go. If you can't physically do a job, then the best way of finding out is by trying it out! Negativity is so boring.

My first job was in telesales on £12k pa cold calling selling toilets. Two years later I grossed £42k. If I can do it, trust me, anyone can.

Stop talking about what you can't do and start thinking about what you are going to do next. Start thinking like Richard Branson, "Screw it, let's do it".

If you don't do this, then you are going to get sader, lonelier, fatter and more depressed very very quickly.
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

True, it could have been an inside job in that they had internal people already or anything I will just never know what the successful person had that I don't.
A relationship with the person interviewing?
Maybe they advertised by mistake. My school did; they forgot they didn't need a German teacher for next year and advertised for one accidentally ...
    That's Numberwang!

you don't need an accounting degree to be an accountant. you just need to be numerate. i did a summer internship in audit with ernst and young and there were people on it who had degrees in arabic, and in philosophy, and in history among the science / business etc grads. the arabic and the philosophy people were among those who got offered jobs at the end of it.

also - its always good to have a spare german teacher around the place - who knows when you might need one urgently?!

A lucky person it makes you. Do you work at university because you believe in the ideals of a university?

No. I applied because it was in the salary scale I knew I'd get at the age I was (19) and qualifications I had. I also applied for others and had my name in every agency I could find. It was just chance I got offered that one first.

My parents only have high hopes for me.

I can not afford to move out until I have a decent job and I don't have job decent job at the moment, so I am stuck for the foresee future.

Move in with a friend and pay them one month in arrears? Then you have a month to find a job and make money. I guarantee that you will find one if your back is up against the wall.

Thomas Edison tried many ways to invent the light bulb, and after each unsuccessful attempt, said "well, at least I've found another way not to make a light bulb".

With each unsuccessful interview, you've found another way not to get a job. Treat this as information.

God, I can't believe I'm still posting on this thread!!! I swear I promised to stop somewhere around page 9...

Everyone keeps saying all these jobs but I don't know where they are. Temp agencies are flooded with students and they just don't want anymore at the moment. So where these jobs are I don't know.

    Phil,

You are disabled - the job centres have disability advisers, who will help you to get your first job.

Just go and see them - it's more help than just moaning!

So philosophy is a pointless course and I have wasted my education studying it, fair enough.

Probably, yes. I can't see what practical help it would be in getting a job.

But, it does show that you are willing to study, and may carry some clout with would-be employers.

You are 22, you have your whole life in front of you - you can do what you want to, if you listen to what we are all saying, stop navel gazing..............and just DO IT!!!

"My parents would simply never ever allow me to work at a fast food store so that is a bad idea for starters."

"Allow" you???? You are 22 and an adult. Forget your parents, they are not your problem. It is not their business where you work. If they think they are above menial work, well, then that makes them very shallow, and I would not bother to listen to their advice, anyway.

Get a job, with the help that you have been told is available, and then just start to live your life, for you.

    Lin ;)

Phil, what exactly would your parents DO to stop you getting a job in a fast food restaurant or similar? Lock you in your room? Take away your bus fare?

If it's all you can immediately get, you take it and you tell them you've taken it. You tell them this is your life, and YOU are living it for YOU, and not for THEM.
