A university is a safe place too where I feel at home I can cope with academics but business and business people are not really something I identify with or have any understanding of.
A university has what I can understand, namely, a strong history and role working in ideas and knowledge. I can understand that and I believe in it. But I don't understand businesses. They don't stand for anything I understand they don't promote ideas or knowledge anything I am interested in.
Thats your problem phil, people get jobs for neccessity and to survive and most people will get any job to do so, you don't have this pressure, perhaps if your parents booted you out your house you may have to expand your interests0 -

A philosophy degree plus all the school qualifications must qualify me to do something and sure it qualifes me to do basic admin work.
As i have said MANY times -no, it doesn't. It just means you can pass exams.
EXPERIENCE counts.

Interests are not going to get you a job unless you have a degree in your interest or you are prepared to work from the very bottom upwards, even if that means working n the post room and making the tea.
Take me, my interest is music, so what did I do? I worked for 8 yrs in retail in sh1**y dead end jobs before dabbling in the music industry. When I got into the music industry it was a big disappointment. It's not glamourous being an assistant to a band manager when all the record execs do is ply their "stars" with drugs and you are trying to keep them straight by intercepting the runners. Yes I met some famous people, yes I still keep in touch with some, but I wouldn't do that again for a million a week.
So I got out of it and went back to retail before I fell too ill to work.
Now I do craft work and sell what and when I can. Not the starry eyed ideals I had when I was 21! (then I never expected to spend 60% of my time in a wheelchair either)The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Why should I give up on my deam of working at a university? You won't give up wanting to be a Law Lord will you. Plus, it is not like you have had to take any old job as it is still a legal one in your dream sector.:beer:0 -

Those idiot 200+ year old organisations I work for who employ researchers and knowledge managers.. don't they realise they should be universities?I hope they give up their foolish ideas soon...Debt free 4th April 2007.

Who said anything about giving up a dream? No-one, you just may have to take a few detours (i.e. other unconnected jobs) before reaching your dream job.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Alight, take a detour for 6 months or year, but still no one wants me in a job that will remotely help me get a job in what I want. I still have no office experience, still can not type, even for another sort of job that is remotely similar.:beer:0 -
Well Phil, you have recieved advice on this and many other threads, d@mned good advice too, some of which I had when I left school. Everyone has a dream job, not everyone gets their dream job. Crazy guy probably won't give up on his dream on being a law lord but he may never get there and will no doubt make do with what he has in the meantime.
If you refuse to take any of the advice given then you will be out of work for a long time and no better than the chav round the block who signs on for a living!

Well if you are not willing to do a little extra training for office work (i.e. ECDL to add to IT GCSE) then you will get nowhere. It's called a COMPROMISE(sp)! The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10
