Careers advice at university is top graduate jobs, legal professions, accounting and look at your CV, other than that I am a loss at what they do other than pump out a load of info on non- existing careers that you can never get a job in.:beer:0

Phil, don't be such a pr@tt, it is ONE job and you did get an interview for it. If you get interviews you had something they were looking for, so eventually you will get a job.
Give yourself a kick up the backside, get out there and apply for another job.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Most people have applied to more jobs than eight!! And were not so fussy either, my job is as interesting as a lump of turd and i've only been in the job 4 days lol
To me if it is not going to help me get a job at a university then it is pointless to me. It is not about being fussy, but about sticking to my objective and to wanting to make something of myself.:beer:0 -

Why are you limiting yourself to just university jobs?
It would be good experience for you to get a job in the real world first.0 -

Because I just can not see myself working for a private firm as they don't do the sort of thing that interests me. A university is a safe place too where I feel at home I can cope with academics but business and business people are not really something I identify with or have any understanding of.
A university has what I can understand, namely, a strong history and role working in ideas and knowledge. I can understand that and I believe in it. But I don't understand businesses. They don't stand for anything I understand they don't promote ideas or knowledge anything I am interested in.:beer:0 -
I know what you mean but you may surprise yourself and find something that does suit you outside of university so don't limit yourself....be brave it may just work out well.0

Don't they say the best way to get a job is to have a job?
You say you dont want to apply for anything that isnt going to lead towards a job in uni but actually any work experience would help you towards getting that job you really want. Just because you take a job that's not your ideal it doesnt mean you have to stop looking for something better.
Think about it from their point of view, 2 candidates with the same qualifications go for a job. One is currently working in a fast food restaurant and has a reference from their employer saying they are punctual, conscientous, etc the other has never worked. Wouldnt you choose the one who had already shown that they could commit to a job, work in a team, have responsibilities, deal with the public, etc.0
