It's perfectly obvious that you are almost completely ignorant about computers if you seriously believe that a cracked disk could be of merchantable quality.

If the disk is cracked it will not keep the foil layer free from the air and said layer will sooner of later oxidise and fail to play. The plastic part of the disk is fundamental to the product and is in no way merely 'cosmetic'.

It depends how bad the crack is........

You can easily repair a minor crack on the disk if it bothers you that much. Some people claim you can fix it with just toothpaste but I have never tried that.

I sense you know you are wrong and just trying to do some April foolery ;)

You are thinking of a scratch.

You can occasionally repair a scratch with toothpaste as it is mildly abrasive and my erode the edge of the scratch sufficiently to stop it diffracting the ingoing or reflected light beam thus allowing the disk to be read.

A crack, even if it did not penetrate to the foil surface could worsen at any time and render the disk useless.

Your sense on that score seems to be as lacking as your sense of the technicalities of CD's and DVD's.

Ah I understand your confusion now. You think we are still in the late 90's!

Technology has moved on in the last few years and its very unlikely the disc bought by the OP was either a cd or a DVD....

That's just wordplay. Whatever the particular term used the materials and manufacture are the same.

Sorry, but this is just being pedantic. The technology is the same even if the disk is not a CD or DVD. A cracked disc is a no-no because apart from the likelihood of it being or very rapidly becoming unreadable there is always the danger and already mentioned, of the disk damaging the box it is used in.

You are completely wrong about this. You should never accept a cracked disk the risk is not worth it.

I like to gamble. Xbox 360 games I just install to the hard drive anyway so as long as the first install works the actual disc is irrelevant. I would happily pay say a fiver for a cracked Xbox 360 version of bioshock.

I've had loads of cracked disks and the majority have worked fine :)

In fairness, anyone who says that a cracked disk is merchantable quality is pretty obviously trolling. I think Kev has pretty much hit the nail on the head.

You're back again. I thought you had been PPR'd for the off topic attack posts that you've become known for?

It's good to have you back, I've missed being the target of your ire :)
