What to do when presented with outrageously bad customer service?

I went in Sheffield City Centre's Game store and bought 2pre-owned games. After a considerable delay from the assistant of finding the disks, I did eventually buy and was ready to leave. I decided to check the disks before leaving the store just incase. I checked mypurchases and found 1 of the disks was cracked and the other scratched to an un-playablestandard. (I know pre-owned won't be in pristine condition, however it was like someone had taken wire wool to the disk)
I asked for a refund, and the store assistant, James, wasincredibly rude and obnoxious as i retuned the two faulty games. He repeatedly askedif i had brought pre-owned games before in a belittling manner, reminding me they wouldn't be in perfect condition he also kepy saying there was nothing wrong with the games and they were checked in-store(despite selling me a cracked disk!)
Overall he made every possbile protestation to not return me these faulty items, moaned about having to check with his manager if he could return it, returned them as slowly as humanly possible, and constant snide and belittling comments.
I know i managed to get my money back, which overall is the main point, but i was just so outraged at the store assistants behaviour, it makes me wonder, what would others do if this happened to them?

a)If I was feeling snotty, I'd bypass the eejit on the desk and insist on speaking to the manager there and then.
And as they probably wouldn't give a toss
b) shop elsewhere. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
In fairness as you never actually tried the games you've no idea if they worked or not. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

That's not really 'fairness'.
If the assistant managed to be such a !!!!!!!! about a cracked disk when the customer hadn't even left the shop can you imagine how difficult he would have been if the disks had left the premises.
Anyway, a cracked disk is clearly not of merchantable quality and so it was absolutely correct for the customer to demand an immediate refund. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Depends how cracked and depends on the price. Game are very good at taking back returns on 2nd hand games that don't work. The issue here is the OP didn't know whether they worked or not.
If the cracked disc still plays and was a cheap price I would be happy to buy it. I just want to play the game not display the disc to my friendsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Until you get to level 60 and the game pauses, judders and won't let you move so you get killed.
So you can't get past Level 60.

If a disk is cracked there is a very high probability that the foil will be damaged and the disk won't play.
Why on earth should a customer be forced to go to the trouble and possible expense of taking the disk home, testing it (and, note the point made by pawsies, above) and then returning it if it won't play?
If something is not of merchantable quality - and a cracked disk certainly fits into that description - it should not be incumbent on the poor customer to have to test it before rejecting it. (Obviously, if you were desperate for the game and felt it might be hard to source elsewhere, it would be your option to accept the disk.)There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
A cracked disc also has a high possibility of breaking apart completely whilst in your games console. So not only would you be down a game, you'd have a chance of filling your console with debris (which would probably break it).
As for the question from the op, I've found Asda customer service has been consistently bad.0 -

Wrong.
It's not "certainly" at all. If the game plays and is priced accordingly to the cosmetic damage then the item is of merchantable quality.

Scratches on the other hand and I would agree.0 -

It's perfectly obvious that you are almost completely ignorant about computers if you seriously believe that a cracked disk could be of merchantable quality.
If the disk is cracked it will not keep the foil layer free from the air and said layer will sooner of later oxidise and fail to play. The plastic part of the disk is fundamental to the product and is in no way merely 'cosmetic'.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
