Cannot close old vodafone account

In October 2009, I took a 2 year contract with Vodafone Mobile Internet. It ran for the two years; I made the last payment and requested that the account be closed in December 2011. I later moved house and life went on until last month, I decided to look at my credit files, and to my surprise noticed this account was still open at my old address (albeit with a zero balance). I have contacted vodafone on numerous occasions to ask them to clsoe this account, but I no longer have the dongle or any paperwork related to this account, and they tell me that without this information THEY ARE UNABLE TO TRACE MY ACCOUNT.
I find this incredulous, especially as they reported to Equifax on 6 March and Call Credit on 1 March - how can they report if they are unable to trace my account?
And how can i get the account closed without the dongle number or account number - I simply do not have this stuff anymore.
Has anyone experienced such a thing? Please help! It is an extremely frsutrating situation and looks dodgy that I have this account on my file at my old address - HELP!

Lee I need to speak to you via email. I have 2 accounts relating to Vodafone cashback. Top cash back is saying that they :-
Quote : simply have to wait until the merchant and affiliate network have manually reviewed your claim and advised us of the appropriate action (which will hopefully be to pay cashback). As you can imagine, some merchants are better at this than others and although most reply within set time limits - some can take several months to respond. unquote.
Is that your department? You have done/sorted one for me last year. This year I applied 2 accounts on behalf of my children. And both accounts are not tracked:(:(
Both saying waiting for merchant/ affiliate network to respond:(
