My parents lived, until Christmas, 6 miles away from us. They are 60 miles at the moment, but will be a back to 6 in a few months.

My Dad works 10 minutes away from our flat. Every week or two, he rings when he's leaving work and suggests popping in to say hello for half an hour. Usually it's fine, and he has no issues if it's not convenient, he doesn't sulk about it or anything.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Many of my friends find it odd that we live so close to my in laws but the in laws have always respected our privacy and we theirs!! It has many advantages, if I ever need an egg or run out of milk they're always happy to help, and if I'm away i know OH has his mum and dad nearby (he has MH issues) and my FIL is always happy to feed the cats if we go away!!
Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last

We live 200m across a field from my parents. They do drop in all the time unannounced (and I go into their house all the time too). It's great, I love them so does my husband and so do our toddlers. HOWEVER we previously lived about 5 miles away from my MIL she also dropped in unannounced and also used her emergency key to let herself into the flat to drop things off etc. This really annoyed me - we don't lock our door where we live now but my parents probably wouldn't go in if we weren't there - I go in there house but that's different:rotfl:

How you cope with proximity depends completely on your relationship and on what boundries you set. I love being so close to my family but would hate being next door to MIL.
