Peterae - sorry to hear you've been a victim of this scam. It's a fairly well-known scam whereby people pay by Paypal, collect the goods in person and then claim not to have received them knowing that Paypal will side with them, although I've not heard of the electronic variation of this before.

From Paypal's perspective, it is difficult to know how to resolve a their-word-against-yours dispute, which is why they have a rule that you should always get proof of postage. Indeed, NEVER accept a Paypal payment unless you intend to obtain this proof.

Don't rely on eBay taking tough action against the buyer. I've found that whilst eBay may talk tough, they're only really interested in making money.

I'm surprised that one can now only leave a buyer positive feedback as the last time I sold anything, there was the option to leave neutral too. It may seem one-sided that a buyer can't be left negative, but it was a positive move to withdraw this facility as a transaction is primarily about the performance of the seller, and we've been reluctant to leave sellers deserved negative feedback in the past for fear of having our ratings damaged with vindictive tit-for-tat negatives in response. If they've now withdrawn the option for neutral feedback, that does seem a bit OTT though.

Also you cant leave a "negative positive" that goes against eBay rules too - the buyer can ask eBay to remove it, and they will.

I once got a negative positive even though it was the seller who made a right !!!! up of the whole thing (I won't bore you with the story), I was the buyer by the way. I asked for it to be removed and it was.

If i want an item on ebay, i will contact the buyer outside of ebay and pay using bank transfers in future.

So when buying something on ebay you will choose to give up the protection that Paypal offers buyers?

There are some odd people around.

I've really gone off Ebay too. I can't truly be bothered to read through tons of info when I want to sell via them. I think it's insanity you can't leave negative feedback if a buyer screws you over.

Twice I've had people bid on items and not pay, opened a dispute and had emails telling me to close it due to no response. What's the point..I was saved a few pence in not having to pay Ebay fees but the buyers never paid and I could never leave feedback warning others. Plus 10% of the money earned via ebay is charged back to them.

Added to that sellers who sell second hand stuff for the same/more than I could buy them new from the actual shop and yeah...over Ebay completely and have been for a while.

    That's just a rant really..

EBAY and PAYPAL are supporting criminal activity and as usual it's the honest person that pays

This is very true. At the moment ebay is chasing me for a charge made fraudulently on my card, a charge that they accept is fraudulent and that was only possible in the first place because of their lax security. Ebay are happy for fraudsters to operate on their site as long as they get their money (which they won't in my case, but I bet a lot of people pay up).

And that reminds me - I need to close down my Paypal account as I don't trust them one bit. I've already closed my Ebay. I used to use Paypal for my work but I will now insist on bank transfer.

It seems some people get quite offended if you criticise EBAY, and are really patronising when you don't know all the rules.
It never seems to be the scammers fault. Ask for help at your peril
