italiastar, I have retrieved the dead bulb that only lasted 7-8 days from the waste paper basket. The bulb was one of four in a box purchased some time ago from a mail order energy saving bulb supplier.

However, there is no manufacturers name on the bulb but tomorrow I am going to dig out the box that still has 2 bulbs in it. The bulb casing is marked
    ''CE L3'' & ''15W EP 48-15U B22 105mA'' & ''No. JSH 02*2910''.

Unfortunately no further markings are present. I think that the moral of the story is to stick to bulbs from companies like Philips & Osram, otherwise it may just be false economy!

Has anyone seen energy saving candle type bulbs equivalenrt to 60 watts because I can only find 40 watt equivalent in the supermarkets. The worst supermarket I have been in for energy saving bulbs is Sainsbury's which only stocks 3 different bulbs from around £2.65 upwards.

Whilst I don't normally like Phillips products, these ones are lasting. The oldest ones I have are 1 year old from the last time they were on offer. I have other low energy bulbs from Ikea which have been running for a couple of years and "old" phillips ones which are about 6 years old. I think you're correct in that it is the brand you bought - I'd give thse a go.

Yes, Morrisons do seem to be running the offer of 39p each again. Previously I had only seen the screw fittings, but they seem to have stocked up to re-run the offer. They had both bayonet and screw fittings in both 60 and 100 on Wednesday and still have stock today.

They (Economy lamps) have been around since the 80s Philips did one, it looked like a Jam jar.
Netto are doing Philips for 79P They were 49P but they put the price up.
I would not even go in IKEA not alone buy from them. I am not alone!
Beware of £1 shop economy lamps, They are rubbish.
I think 12 years is a bit optomistic and just because it gives out light after many years as they get old they use more power and give out less light, If you do not believe me replace an old one and see the difference.
5 to 6 years is more realistic.
Small bayonet lamps are as bad as normal bayonet lamps but give us time, We will learn. If the whole world does it one way we British who always know best do it another way, That is where our Car, Aircraft & Shipbuilding industries went, To the people who copied us and now do it better.
Have you heard that at last it looks like we are going to rid of our over engineered 13Amp plugs? Looks like we may at last adopt the continental system. There is to be a conference about this in November. As an Electrician and Engineer who has worked all over the World I fully support this.
I hope that helps some of you.

As a tip, we've found the 11w = 60w is very misleading. The quality of light is not good. Go for the 18w ones.

Do you mean the Morrison's 11w is misleading or in general 11w energy saving lamps are? Only because I often buy 11w and have found that all I have bought are perfect for replacing 60w incandescent.

This is my biggest problem with them. I have dimmers everywhere. I like lots of light to do intricate things and a dim light to do more romantic or relaxing things. Traditional bulbs with a dimmer can deliver this. The only way with the low energy bulbs is to have extra circuits so you can switch either 2 or 4 or 8 on etc in a large room
I have found some variable output low energy bulbs that work off a 'normal' switch that trigger by switching them on/off/on quickly. Think they come on at 100%, 70% or 40%. I have considered swapping my dimmer switches back to normal switches to try them but can't find them at 49p! Does anyone know how good this type of 'dimable' low energy bulbs is?

Also has anyone found cheap low energy E27 screw 63mm spot lamps in 60, 80 or 100W equivalent?
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!
  • Hi all,
We use low energy bulbs all over our house, and have tried literally dozens of different types. I'm no scientist, but we have found the following:

Those made in the E.U. last much better and give a much more consistent light quality than other non E.U. made bulbs.

We no longer buy "own brands" from the likes of Ikea or Homebase, as these have consistently been poor quality and not lasted.

As an indication of good useful life expectance, a Phillips "kettle element" type bulb which we bought in 1992 (and very sadly wrote the purchase date on, cos they were a novelty then..) has JUST stopped working. And I think that if we replaced the bulb bit, the starter would still be going strong....
A three pack of looks-like-normal-lightbulb low energy bulbs from Homebase have so far lasted less than 9 months, and travelled half way around the world too.........

Good luck, buy from a (relatively) local manufacturer and spend a few quid - it makes sense.
Happy to be put right on this one, but a 15 year trial is a pretty good indication of use.
