Don't buy the Ikea ones - our friends had them and they were really dim so definately not worth buying.

A couple of weeks ago the 15 watt energy saving bulb in the lamp on top of my TV stopped had stopped working at some point while I was away on holiday.

Last week I replaced it with another 15 watt bulb from the same box of 4 & it seemed to be working perfectly, well until the early hours of Friday morning that is. I was browsing the internet when there was a loud bang & the reading lamp fell into darkness! So, the new energy saving bulb lasted 7 - 8 days. What happened to 10,000 hours+ ?

    What make were these?

italiastar, I have retrieved the dead bulb that only lasted 7-8 days from the waste paper basket. The bulb was one of four in a box purchased some time ago from a mail order energy saving bulb supplier.

However, there is no manufacturers name on the bulb but tomorrow I am going to dig out the box that still has 2 bulbs in it. The bulb casing is marked
    ''CE L3'' & ''15W EP 48-15U B22 105mA'' & ''No. JSH 02*2910''.

Unfortunately no further markings are present. I think that the moral of the story is to stick to bulbs from companies like Philips & Osram, otherwise it may just be false economy!

Has anyone seen energy saving candle type bulbs equivalenrt to 60 watts because I can only find 40 watt equivalent in the supermarkets. The worst supermarket I have been in for energy saving bulbs is Sainsbury's which only stocks 3 different bulbs from around £2.65 upwards.

the morrisons offer has saved me a small fortune as i was in homebase the other day and they were selling a twin pack of almost identicle bulbs 100 watts output bayonet fitting for £7.99. after i read about the offer i took them back for a refund and now use 7 phillips bulbs from morrisons for £2.73 not to mention the savings on my electricity bill.

    Morrisons sell these at 39p.
My local Homebase sell the same bulbs at £3.49.
Homebase price promice is "will match the price and refund 10% of the difference.
    Costings = £3.49 minus 39p = £3.10 , 10% of £3.10 = 31p refunded.
So you get the bulbs for the sum of 8 PENCE !!!

Brilliant :T - has anyone tried this ?
  • Sorry, should have been more succinct on my first post. Yes, I did this and the manager couldn’t believe that Morrisons were selling them so cheaply. Manager and myself came to a mutual agreement and I bought 10 at 8 pence each. He was going to take it up with head office so I guess that they will be off the shelves fairly quickly.

Can anyone tell me why you can never get small bayonet cap bulbs on these special offers. I managed to find SES ones recently but not the cap ones.

Where did you find the SES ones and were they a decent price? I need some and so far they seem to cost silly money.

    Thanks.

Morrisons in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Crewe had a display of the 39p variants, there are less than when I went in!

Also... Ikea stock R50 screw-in spotlights in energy savers. They are only 7W = 25W which can be a bit dim to start with but is ok when it warms up, we use them in our bathroom, who wants really bright lights when you go to the loo in the middle of the night !

Does anybody know of a 40W equivalent R50 spotlight equivalent?

You should find that a lot of the major retailers will be shifting bucketloads of Low energy lamps before 1st of july to tick off the correct box in their government requirements to encourage consumers to reduce energy. If you see them buy them in bulk and stockpile!!!
As suggested in an earlier post it is generally the energy companies who through government grants are actually giving away the lamps to the retailers such as morrisons for free. They just set a price that covers their costs plus margin. On a negative side for low energy lamps from an environmental point of view they generally contain Mercury (which is pretty bad stuff to get rid of). What you get in one hand you give away with the other
