Patient transfer services are for clinical need only in some trusts. So if you are fit enough to get in a taxi, bus or train then you don't qualify. There are loads of options open to patients travelling to hospital, I suggest the OP explores them fully before forking out cash to this idiot taxi driver. Some services operate a door to door service which is effectively a taxi that lifts and lays you but at much reduced costs. You should contact the hospital your going to and ask what options they have.0

Generally I don't leave tips as nobody tips me in my job so why should I tip other people?0

Cheeky git! The only time I've ever tipped a taxi driver was when I was in labour, fully dilated and he somehow managed to get us to hospital with only 13 minutes to spare through rush hour traffic. We gave him a tenner for a five quid fare and he was worth every penny.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

When I am in America I will tip because it is their culture but it really annoys me when Americans want to do it in other countries. On a cruise once there were 4 of us from England and 4 from America and we booked a private tour for the 8 of us. The Americans wanted to tip the driver BEFORE we set off for the day. We said absolutely not, let's see if he deserves it first. I think a tip should be for service over and above the norm. The next cruise we are going on, we have to pay the gratuities in advance and I don't like it at all but as it is an American cruise ship it is expected and there isn't another one we could do.
If you go on https://www.cruisecritic.co.uk on the forums you will find arguments raging between Americans and other nationalities about tipping and it is quite entertaining to see how they call us mean, stingy etc and it gets quite heated.
Same as on some of the trip advisor forums it's pretty funny.
Now when someone even mentions the word tipping in a new post people start posting about how they're about to sit back with the popcorn type jokes!
One thing I didn't realise before going on the US forums was you are supposed to tip the maids in hotels so we always leave a couple of $ each day now on holidays.0 -
My hubby was a taxi driver (is resting at the moment as has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis) and he really appreciates tips whether big or small.
However, i dispute all those people who have said they earn loads. Like anyone that is self employed they have a lot of overheads just to run the vehicle and can only earn if there are people taking taxis. They dont get paid if nobody uses a taxi. There is a set meter rate so they cant charge what they want and down here in kent there is an awful lot of drivers for a small town and business like a lot of others is dwindling.
£20 is a massive tip on a £80 journey and if you cant afford a tip op then dont give one. We are now down to one income and £20 is my fresh meat amount so i wouldnt give it up without a struggle :rotfl:0 -
I have never tipped a taxi driver! I think mu husband has but it's if it's £9 and gives a ten pound note over. No more than that!Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0

I do leave tips where appropriate, and if I'm happy with service received.
I tip in restaurants and tip tour guides, after the tour. I wouldn't be happy to be asked for a tip though. I think I'd book a different taxi company.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Im not going to comment on whether or not I tip taxi drivers - as I dont use a taxi very often as I drive myself..However , reading some of the comments on here I just had to say:
Taxi drivers are self employed and so they dont earn a "wage". Someone on this thread seems to think they earn a DECENT WAGE :rotfl:Yeah right ... if only.
Complaining to the taxi company about the comment allegedly made by the driver wont bother the owner at all. The driver is self employed and so the owner wont care. They might sound symapethic to you if you do call up to complain but trust me , it wont be genuine.
Taxi drivers DO NOT get paid more for working at night! Someone seems to think that drivers who are on the road at night earn more - not true Im afraid. Day journeys are charged just the same as night journeys.
Another poster mentioned that the job of a taxi driver is not a taxing job....obviously you have never been a taxi driver? Being stuck in a car all day , listening to passengers whinging on , drunks throwing up all over your car.....Yeah its everyones dream job :rotfl:The loopy one has gone :j0 -
I am surprised how many people would not 'tip' a friend with a thank you gift (along with paying for petrol if the friend will accept it.
I see it as quite separate from the tipping issue though.0 -
My haircut today..Cost £8.50.. Tip £1.50...I could not stand there and wait for the £1.50..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0
