The guy in the OP is a cheeky git, taking advantage! It should backfire on him if OP reports him as suggested.

I tip waiting staff, usually about 10per cent here . I spend a good deal of time in the USA, where the tipping culture drives me mad.

I'd prefer the cost of decent pay to be incorporated into the price of meal or pedicure etc. Then I'd tip for good service.

what tone did he use when he mentioned the tip, was he joking, or being serious?

most taxi drivers prefer long journeys, so you're in effect doing him a favour!

If the driver was pleasant and friendly, then I'd prob give him £5 tip for the journey.

No. The closest i get to tipping is maybe rounding up a taxi fare to the next pound rather than wait for change. Also if dining out, i may leave a small tip on the table. I absolutely WILL NOT tolerate tips or service charges being added as of right.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I remember taking a taxi in the USA when I was 18 - I didn't have enough spare cash on me to "properly" tip the guy, so gave him what I could. He got very angry and started shouting at me/trying to intimidate me into giving him more money. Same trip, got into a taxi at 3am after having a night out with friends - taxi driver seemed nice and friendly, we got chatting, then he tells me he's not actually a taxi driver, he's borrowing his friend's taxi and seeing as how I am a young female travelling alone would I like to be his friend.. To top it off the cheap motel I was staying in had told me "we wont put you on the ground floor, just in case someone tries to break in". lol. But yeah....beware of taxi drivers ;).

    I've been Money Tipped!
In UK I tip for good service but not as standard. I might round up as standard inpf paying by cash.

When tipping I tend to check to see of it goes into a tip jar of if its kept by the staff member I tip. In somecm circumstances a tip jar is great by me (if had multiple attendants and all have given great service) but in many cases I only want to tip the person who has waited my table.

When I worked some bars when younger it was gutting to be sent out to be pinched, touched and mauled by older and uglier staff members and bar managers, to 'earn' a decent tip, which was then divided by people who had been tipped less or not at all. I would rather not have been tipped than share the 'earnings' or better still, taken turns at entering the throngs for dead glasses and table service.

Can you not get a friend to take you? Would much rather pay for a friends fuel plus some extra for a few beers / wine, than pay robbing taxi drivers!

Regarding the OPs problem, I would definitely ring the taxi firm up and tell them I wouldn't be using them again and why.
OP like someone else has said can you not get hospital transport? I personally will only pay for taxis if there absolutely no alternative. For nights out etc I make sure I catch the last bus and sometimes I wont go if I cant get home on public transport.
They charge far too much anyway, last time I got a taxi for 4 miles it was £11.00. Thats extortionate.
I wont tip them, no way they charge too much anyway.

I have a friend who does only airport runs and he is quite happy with £3 or £5. He says the best tippers are the ones with little. The rich ones don't tip and expect you to even go up to their bedroom to collect cases.

I blame America for this tipping lark, would be better for the staff if they got a more generous salary.

me too. I will cross it out and give the waitress a tip, in cash, based on what I think is fair (should it be less, or more).

if a manager asks why i have rejected the "optional" service charge, i just tell them i refuse to pay them and, instead, will tip as I see fit.

I don't tip, it costs a fortune as it is! Now that money is tight I rarely tip at all, we give 5-10% on meals IF the service and food have been good, which doesn't seem as often as you would hope. Husband glares at me as he would rather pay up than be embarrassed :D

No one tips me for my job, why do certain jobs expect it and lots (public facing too) don't get considered?
