Thanks for your help, I'm gonna have more of a look around on the high street like you have suggested! My bridesmaids are 40, 30, 26, 21 and 12! So bit of a mixture!

  • It's soooo hard to find when you have your colour set! So I just want to say you could also do cream/ivory with the green sash.

Thanks Catmonkey, I had thought about that actually, I have found some sashes that "look" like exactly the same colour, so hopefully that would work! I am hopefully going to be choosing my wedding dress tomorrow, so will know more about what to do for bridesmaids then, with material etc!

You could ask the bridesmaids (or their parents) to give a contribution to the cost of the dress on the understanding that they can keep them afterwards? If you go for a 'proper' bridesmaid range of dresses, you choose the colour, and they choose the style they like?

Something else to try to find frocks would be ex sample sales that bridal shops have - might be tricky to get identical styles though!

At our wedding, I ended up choosing Ivory for my bridesmaid, she was in satin, my ivory dress was organza. We both had little bolero jackets - similar style, different material, and we looked stunning!!

Even better, I got her satin dress in Debenhams sale for £15.....
and mine courtesy of a Charity shop, it was the expensive one at £25!

When I took it to a wedding dress specialist dressmaker to be altered, she said that it was a couture dress that had never been worn.
So that was a lucky day!! The second very lucky day being our wedding which was simply fabulous.
Enjoy your day - hope it is a really happy one!

Wow! Sounds fantastic. I really wish I had only kept to the original two I wanted as bridesmaids, but I got carried away. As much as I love the other girls to bits, I just wanted my two best mates and no family. But hey ho, the other girls are fab and I won't give two hoots on the day i'm sure, i'll probably be more than glad they are there! It is just the palava of having to sort out five dresses instead of two!! I had thought about asking for a contribution, some had even suggested it. So i'll see what happens and like you say, i'll keep my eye out for sales too!

If any of them can sew - could they be asked to make their dresses? Once you start looking at Bridesmaids frocks, you start to realise there really isn't a huge lot to them.....Someone handy with a sewing machine could work wonders!
    :)

One piece of advice I would give you with 5 bridesmaids, is make sure they all have a different "job" to do on the day, or even in the run up to the day. It is your day, and they are there to support you, but sometimes folks need a wee reminder!
eg the 'jobs' could include Organise a hen party, or organise different parts of a hen party, if you are having one, help with younger bridesmaids, assist during photographs to make sure everyone you want to be photographed is in the right place, help you with your dress, your hair, your bouquet, arrange the favours on the tables, liaise with caterers on the day etc etc etc.

Also - if you want one of them to be 'in charge', ie take the role of your senior Bridesmaid, make that quite clear at the outset to all of them, to avoid any potential 'prima donna' issues!
With that number, you don't want anyone making life any trickier than it already is in the run up to the wedding!

Of course, they are probably absolutely wonderful and delighted to be a bridesmaid, will support you in every way possible and help to make your day completely fantastic!
Sadly, I asked one of my oldest friends to be my other bridesmaid, and looking back, it would seem she didn't actually want to do it, but never told me. I thought she would have been delighted, and I really wanted her to be there to see me get married.
Unfortunately, with 6 weeks to go and still not having chosen her dress, she ended up refusing to come to the wedding at all and we have not spoken since.....

Best of luck for yours, I am sure it will be wonderful!
  • I'm also having 5 bridesmaids, I got their dresses from BHS, the twist & wrap dresses in Sapphire. They often have 20% or more off & they were £80 before the discount. Would recommend them to anyone!
