Bridesmaid dresses - advice needed!

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a bit of advice, and just people's opinions really! I am going to be having 5 bridesmaids (don't ask how I ended up with that many!) and as you can imagine I don't want, nor can I afford, to spend £200 on each dress. That seems to be the price in a lot of these dress shops!

I've been looking around on ebay, there are some beautiful dresses, mainly from China, that are around £30. I'm thinking, buy one and see what it's like? If I buy it in my size, I could always wear it sometime or it can go back on ebay!

Has anyone any experience of getting bridesmaid dresses, either from ebay or elsewhere, that don't cost the earth? I am in Lancashire but would travel within reason! My colour scheme is dark green (some call it forest green) and ivory. I wouldn't be afraid of black bridesmaid dresses with sashes in say the green, if this would keep the costs down, as I know black dresses are easier to come by in lots of places!

Thanks for any advice and experiences you can offer me:)

My SIL bought her 3 BM dresses from ebay, they were lovely & made to measure.
I bought my BM dresses from Monsoon in the sales-£35 each. Don't rule out the highstreet immediately just because you don't want to spend a fortune!

I originally considered dresses from China, because they were so cheap. I bought one for myself as a trial, but despite the fact that I paid for postage (which wasn't cheap) I ended up paying another £30 to pick my dress up. I quickly realised that I'd be better off buying the dresses here in the UK.

In the end, we bought the dresses from Coast. Both bridesmaids are very happy with them, and they didn't cost too much.

I also got mine from BHS when there was 20% off so they worked out at £72 each. They are gorgeous and brilliant quality.

I had the same thought as you about ordering a dress from China in my size to test the quality. I did and it was awful. Barely wearable. I soon decided to forget about looking at dresses from China!

Hi, my wee sister has ordered a prom dress from china through eBay, so I'm going to see what the quality is like, and if its ok I will get bridesmaids dresses from there.

I'm getting married in October, I will be trying BHS, debenhams, monsoon etc. on principle, I am not going to an overpriced wedding shop!! My own dress is also from monsoon (2nd hand on eBay) :) xx

It's definitely worth checking out the high street - not least because it's easy to take the dresses back if there's any problem! Mine were £70 each from John Lewis, so more expensive than some of the ebay sellers but cheaper than a bridal shop.

My friend got a gorgeous wedding dress from China for peanuts, so it works out sometimes - I think it's largely a question of luck!
