Ignorance! Argh!!!!

I've been having a few relationship problems so I've been staying with my mum, dad and sister for a few days to clear the air but it's driving me mad!

My sister just starting commenting on a story where a woman got thrown out of a childrens film because her daughter with Downs Syndrome was "laughing too loud". My sister said that they were right to do so because it was ruining others enjoyment. Of course I vehemently disagreed; are parents with children with disabilities supposed to lock up their kids so they won't bother the rest of us? I said that you should understand that there will be noise when watching a kids film, children laughing, crying, getting up to use the loo seven times in the middle, rustling packets etc.

And then she pulled the whole "oh it's just my opinion" schtick on me. Well, that's like a red flag to a bull for me and I did forcibly point out that just because it is her opinion it doesn't mean she isn't immune from critism and that it was my opinion that she is a d*ck. My opinion clearly offended her (which is funny as her whole argument was based around the fact that I shouldn't be offended by her opinion...) and she starting screaming "FREEDOM OF SPEECH! FREEDOM OF SPEECH!" .I lost my temper (admittedly) and said that was from the American Bill of Rights, using the freedom of speech defence just shows how stupid and ignorant she is because she should know we do not have freedom of speech as we have laws against hate speech. Then she showed me all the comments of people who agreed with her... on the Daily Mail website. I couldn't help but laugh at her. Really?!

So then she got really angry and started screaming at the top of her lungs saying "no wonder you have no friends and your boyfriend doesn't want you around. Get out of my house and get my jumper off your back." whilst wearing my leather jacket and brand new jumper. I wouldn't mind but she's never paid rent in her life, I had moved out before getting to her age, paid rent from the age of 17 and have offered my dad money for my keep this week which he has kindly not accepted as I am on maternity leave currently.

She then took a swing at me which made her angrier as I didn't flinch and then starting screaming in my face which made my three and a half month old burst into tears. I immediately went to him and she screamed "I don't give a f*ck!" and stomped off.

She has a nasty streak and I think I do bring it out of her because I rarely shout but I do speak my mind. My dad said I should just accept that she has a differentoopinion to mine and accept it. But I just can't. I think if more people stood up to bigots we'd have a lot less hate in the world. I couldn't stand by and let her be ableist anymore than I could listen to racism or sexism.

I think I got so angry because she is training to work with sick and disabled children. Honestly. It's part of the reason I just couldn't let it go and ignore her hate.

I don't know why I really wrote this other than to rant.

I must admit, I totally agree.

I absolutely loathe it when people in the office make casually racist comments or comments like the above and I get mocked for making a point of it - like I'm being "too PC". No, I'm being a decent human being.

Your sister totally overreacted but I don't think you did anything wrong.

I got bored half way through your thread, but from what I did read it appears that you and your sister are equally intolerant of others who do not share their views.

Your mum and dad should send both of you to bed without your tea. Grow up.

You both sound as petty as each other to be honest.

Sorry but how old are you both? Seriously, how can such an disagreement lead to such drama???? So what, you disagree on a matter than in the end, neither of you knew the actual circumstances of.

    Life is too short....

Can see why you got angry, she sounds a bit ignorant and bad tempered. You, though, are not innocent either lol.

I'm not sure why I should have to tolerate intolerance, ignorance and hate. Where would it end?

I just think if you have an offensive opinion you should be better equipped to defend it with "well it's just an opinion!".

Oh I definitely know I'm not innocent and will admit to "troll baiting" her. I don't think I will ever understand her point of view. I guess I can't sit back and listen to someone talking utter tripe!

  • I think you may need to consider a hotel, as you really aren't best placed to stay there - and going back to somebody purely because your little sister has the ability to drag you back into a fight like a six year old wouldn't be the best solution to your relationship issues, either.

Having said that, I must admit that had somebody swung at me, I would most likely have hospitalised them. And then booked a hotel.

And she won't last ten minutes working with children if she feels like that, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

How can you accuse her of being ignorant when you are yourself ignorant of the actual situation that lead to the child and parent being ask to leave. Maybe the child was acting in a way that was frightening other children, maybe he was acting distressed who knows. You can't conclude from what was heard that discrimination took place. If there were less people jumping to conclusions and acting aggressively as a result, there would much less trouble all around.
