New TV/old sound system

  • Another thing we need to establish is exactly what job your old digibox did - was it just for tv when the analogue signal turned off or does it record aswell?

If it was just to provide a digital tv feed to the analogue tv then it is now redundant.

IF you're going to buy a soundbar, then buy a DVD player and link it to the TV. Then you don't need your old hifi at all. The DVD player will play your CDs for you and the sound will come out the soundbar.

I've recently ditched my old hifi (which was excellent) and switched to a soundbar connected to the TV. The soundbar I have also plays any music on any device connected to our home network, so all the iTunes stuff, etc and internet radio.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

If your surround system has audio inputs you could connect from the tv headphone socket.

Yes you can but it's not an elegant solution as it may involve a visible cable form the front of the tv and it also means that the user MUST either turn on surround sound device or unplug to hear tv sound... it you're just quickly flicking on the tv to catch something then it becomes cumbersome - for the sake of £25 DAC you end up with a much better solution.

Thanks everyone. Today I bought the Panasonic Viera 32". I won't get it until 30th October but I also have details of the DAC and where to get it from. I am going to try that way rather than get a sound bar, as I think I will get better sound. If it doesn't work for whatever reason I can always add a sound bar later, but that is my first choice.

Also found out today that I got a pay rise after many years' trying to prove myself lol so I treated myself to the Viera. I was going to get it on a store card but not sure I would be approved for it, and it was going to take a week or so because i have just moved house and they can't check my credit record yet blah blah. It would only encourage me to spend in there anyway and having just taken on a mortgage for the first time I was wary of even buying the TV until I got the rise.:)

Yes just tv - I have binned it already. I don't know why I could get a signal in my old place in north Herts, and not in new place in Hemel Hempstead, with same kit!!

OK thanks. But do you get as good a sound as with your old hifi? As I love the sound of mine I don't want to compromise this.

I can't tell the difference, but then again, I don't listen in an acoustically perfect room and I keep the volume fairly low - my neighbours don't know what I'm listening to!

I keep the volume quite low too. Unfortunately not all my neighbours do, sadly.
