New TV/old sound system

Why do you need a soundbar if you have a good sound system?0

[STRIKE]You should also consider seeing if you can get a TV with audio out PHONO connections as by the looks of some ropey images I have seen online, you could take the sound out of the TV into the surround system - I'd imagine your old telly didn't have that option as otherwise your neighbour would probably have connected it[/STRIKE].
It seems almost impossible to buy a new TV with analogue audio out so scratch that!... unless you want to get a DAC (digital to analogue converter)!
I think I'm also correct in saying that if the new TV has COMPONENT video IN then you could connect using that instead of SCART and get a better picture.0 -

I have now moved and have enquired in a couple of places so am a bit more clued up. I was told by one technical guy in a large dept store that I can get a converter cable for about £40-50.
What for ???
I am looking at the Panasonic Viera 32" and a sound bar. Then will play music only through the old system.
Why do you or the salesman reckon you need a sound bar?0 -

So, someone in a store recommended you get a 'converter', but you're not really clear on what the converter does, nor where to get one?
Question - which MODEL NUMBER of Panasonic Viera are you looking at?
I thought we were at the point where we'd established that if you got a Pana with two SCART sockets, that you'd be able to use your system in exactly the same way as you did before, but you seem to have moved on from that, whether with 'help' from the store assistant or not....0 -
Hi
I'll try to answer these posts. Sound bar was recommended because TV sound is being compromised as they get thinner and lighter - manufacturers are placing more emphasis on picture and less on sound.
This is the model I am thinking of:

Because I keep being told that I can't fit my old sound system onto a new TV. Then I am being told by others that I can, by using a converter but I can't get any more info on this or know for certain that I can.
My other option is to use the old system for my CDs and keep it but not connect it to TV and just use a TV on its own or with a sound bar.0 -

OK. The DAC may be what the guy in the store was talking about. Will look into this, thanks.0 -

You are right that is what I wanted, but one store has told me it's impossible and another that it is possible with converter. Basically I'm a bit confused at the moment as this is not something I've ever had to do before. I'm sure it's straightforward but I am learning as I go along.:)0 -
This should be pretty simple if you could just confirm exactly what connections the DVD/surround system has please so we can be 100% sure...
Does it have a pair of small round ones (one red and one white) labelled either 'phono in' or 'audio in'???
If not then does it have any kind of connection labelled audio in?0 -
Yes it has, red and white "audio in".
The guy from the store got back to me and it was the DAC that you recommended. He suggested Maplin.
Haven't bought a TV yet but thinking of going tomorrow to order one.
