http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2519754/Bitcoin-freefall-Value-virtual-currency-dropping-China-questions-legal-status.htmlThe value of Bitcoins continued plunging today, dropping below $700 - down from just over $1,000 the day before - after the Chinese government questioned the legal status of the virtual currency.
A joint statement from several Chinese official bodies such as the People's Bank of China said Bitcoins are not a currency and cannot be used as a form of payment by any businesses or financial institutions.
This announcement sent the increasingly popular method of payment plummeting from a high of $1,216 to $870 on the MT.Gox Bitcoin exchange. The value of a single Bitcoin has briefly rallied, creeping back to around $1,045, before shedding more than $300 today.
Within about 10 minutes, the value of Bitcoin went from just over $700 down to $660 - and continued see-sawing throughout the night.

I was surprised when I followed your link at 7.23 am when you first posted because the article was dated 11 April, has bitcoin crashed (and recovered) before? I noted that you then edited and changed your link.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0

I actually read it in the Daily Mail first then looked for the story repeated elsewhere so people wouldn't think I read the Daily Mail, but as you say; that was a previous bitcoin crash.
This one is almost definitely fresh, but being from the Mail, there is probably only a 50% chance it is true.0 -
I don't know if it helps rugged, but here's a story from the BBC tech pages, confirming China's statement on bitcoin. It doesn't however say the impact on the currency:

And here's Bloomberg on the financial impact, which depends on the market traded on. Down 20% on BTC China and 30% on Bitstamp:
