    On the other hand you have to be pretty short tempered to be annoyed by this. Phone goes, you answer it, you hang up. It's not a disaster :-)

    The previous occupants of this house still give this number (one has dementia), We are tps reg, ex directory and everything else, never give out the house number for unknown purpose.

    As for being annoyed, I have a neurological condition, one of symptoms of which is a problem calld TGN which feels a bit like being stabbed in the side of the face with a knife. The phone triggers this. I need it for my business, family calls and life, but it does often cause me severe pain to use it. My friends and husband mainly email me, or I spend as long as I can on hands free. There are all sorts of reasons answering the phone can be 'awkward' and make people short tempered. Shift work, sleeping tiny kids, mobility issues making 'a quick call' something one can be riled by.

    To the person saying this thread makes them mad, being called ten or twenty times a day by someone wasting my time makes ME mad. I have to drop what I'm doing to be confronted either by a blank line when I pick the phone up or someone telling me I'm owed PPI, which I'm not. They're not working for my benefit, they're fishing. It makes ME mad to have someone on a crackly line from an Indian call centre ringing and asking 'do you have credit card, mortgage, loan?' And, when told that I don't, whether that's the truth or not, move on to 'oh, does Mr ... Have credit card, mortgage loan?'.

    Can you ask your service provider for a new number? Even if it means paying? I would. I think you've got good grounds to request one seeing as the previous occupant is sharing it around willy-nilly. Obviously it's not done with malicious intent but it's causing problems for you and I don't see why you should suffer. If your service provider is happy to take your money each month, they can make a bit of effort, IMO.

    I've noticed that, regardless of what boxes you tick, every time you sign up with a company on the interweb, they automatically add you to their email mailing list.

    Very recently I had marketing emails from a (reputable) company which said that 'You receive these mails because you've given your permission for us to contact you. If you don't wish to receive these click unsubscribe' or some such.

    I was adamant that I'd correctly checked and unchecked each box so went back to the site and started the registration process again as a new customer.

    What I noticed was that none of the boxes referred to email marketing from the company themselves. I had correctly checked/unchecked the boxes (there were two) but one referenced third parties, i.e. selling my details, and the other referred to contacting me by phone call or SMS. What I couldn't do, therefore, was opt out of marketing emails up front (until I was given the opportunity to unsubscribe).

    This infuriates me but what can you do? They're all the same and thankfully at least my details haven't been sold.

    At the end of what itself WAS a nuisance call they want £35 to go on their registry.
    Be warned, just another scam?

    Yes - although scam is probably slightly harsh; Unnecessary would be more relevant. They would only be useful if companies checked their call lists against them. (Which they won't).

    So they're no better than TPS, you have to pay, and TPS at least has some semblance of legality.

    what gets my back up with these nuisance callers who are conducting a survey and not trying to sell me anything, is that they tell a blatant lie about their identity from the off, introducing themselves with an english sounding name when it is abundantly clear that it is a false name that they can barely pronounce

    i cannot trust anyone who does that and i think its disgusting that they are told to do this

    i would be more likely to participate in their survey if the caller had the honesty and decency to tell me their real name

    why should i give them any information if they lie through their teeth like this

    i receive several calls a day and am at my wits end

    i have resorted to asking them to stay on the line so that my friends in the US military can pin point their location and call in a drone strike on their effing call centre

    and still they will not give up
