Does no-one ever think that most of the people on the other end of the line are just doing their job?
Yes there are scam calls and unwanted sales calls and they can be irritating but not all calls are like that. I've worked in a call centre, (We only called people who had existing business with us) and the agent has NO control over the phone number dialled, this is done by computer selection. So what benefit is there in abusing the agent?
And as for saying no-one should take these jobs......do you expect us to live on benefits??? There are not that many jobs available and people mostly have to take what they can.
"What benefit is there in abusing the agent"? Let me tell you then...
You call me, uninvited in the privacy of my own home just as I am either relaxing or eating my meal or doing anything else come to that to try and get me to buy something I do not want (even if I have many moons ago bought one piddling item from your company) and I will feel immense personal benefit in telling you to go swivel on it! Hope that answers that question for you.0 -

Same as when your doorbell goes, you stop what you're doing, you expect it to be something important and you get greeted with a guy holding a clipboard from an energy/window company etc.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £24,616.090 -

Or a charity collector or someone who's touting for business for guttering/driveway.0 -

For this reason I treat such callers with contempt and not sympathy, because that is all they deserve.
I stick to my theory, no stranger ever phones me up to do me a favour.

I've just started getting a lot of calls. I usually say "hold on one moment" then leave the phone and walk off. They hang up eventually but it's obviously not working as they keep calling. I'm considering unplugging my landline as they are the only calls I get on it.0

Quite simply people would be better off on the dole than in these "non-jobs". One of my friends works as a Jobseeker Advisor and the public side is that any job is welcome. On the private side she detests these jobs because 99% of people will end back on the dole after jacking the job in after 1-3 months. The result is that the job will often mess up housing benefits and the claimant will end up in more debt as they have to wait for qualifying periods. Knockbacks, whether the recipient is nice or not is still a knockback and you get fed up with all the No's.
On a personal level I detest all cold callers whether doorstep or telephone. Everyone is happy to drop everything and answer the phone to a friend or taking in a parcel for a neighbour. But when you have been called for the 10th time that day the concept does wear thin.
Cold callers prey on your expectation that the call is important. They interrupt your family or business life. So you were spending time with the kids and someone thinks that them offering you double glazing is more important. You're working from home earning money to put a roof over your head and pay your sons football coach, but someone thinks they are more important in calling you for PPI and interrupt your train of thought. These cold callers are NOT more important than your work or your family which is why you should waste their time and be rude to them. The fact that they are using intrusive methods to earn a living does not justify their existence. The man without a signature.0 -

A call centre is a million miles from an unsolicited PPI claims call which is what the previous poster was referring to.
Did you phone people up telling them 'our records show you're entitled to claim £3375 in respect of your missold PPI'? knowing full well that this is merely a speculative sentence and your 'records' don't show anything of the sort. Because they don't exist.
If you did, then you deserve to have people giving you abuse. I could get a job kneecapping people for the local mafia (hey! It's better than benefits!) but I don't. Because it's immoral and illegal and so is harassing people by phoning them without their permission and being disingenuous about information held."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
The people to blame are the idiots who actually buy or sign up or whatever is being offered. They wouldn't phone up if some people didn't actually buy it.
On the other hand you have to be pretty short tempered to be annoyed by this. Phone goes, you answer it, you hang up. It's not a disaster :-)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Even the ones clearly lying, about calling from windows etc?
I don't whistle or abuse them, but I do tell them they should be ashamed of themselves for being involved in fraud.0 -

It does annoy people though, doesn't it? Some unfortunate souls are getting phoned 8, 9, 10 times plus an evening. I read about one poor sod who was getting 30 calls a day from someone or other. Once you're on a lot of lists, things snowball. Thankfully I've been very careful with my number and I'm not in that situation, but, trust me, if I were, it would wear me out and I'm a pretty even-tempered kind of person."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0
