I hadn't seen that thread before, Fire Fox. Thanks so much - I haven't laughed so much in ages.:rotfl:

B3ta has lots of suggestions how to wind up cold callers. Not that I'd suggest you do such a terrible thing, ahem.
I like this one: http://b3ta.com/questions/trolls/post1212378
"I used to take great delight in:
giving a ridiculously false name (Miss Tallulah Nahasapeemapetilon, Rev. Dave Thelordisoursavior)
giving my address as cell 962, B wing, Styal Prison
continuing my conversation with my cat, asking her opinion on what I was being sold
saying "you'll have to speak more slowly, I'm naked"
giving a few fake details, then saying "what is it you want the info for again?" giving a few more fake details then saying "what is it you want the info for?"
when asked if I own my home, saying "no I just squat here"
answering every question with "stop messing about, Dave, I know it's you"
I would always tell double-glazing types that my house didn't have any windows and that I'd bricked them all up because "I'm a vampire, you see"
saying "can you hang on a minute" and lying the reciever on the table, returning every minute or so to say "I'll be with you in a tick"
Asking really stupid questions, like "what's a loan?" or "what are windows?"
just repeating their questions back to them instead of giving an answer
I think I got blacklisted after a while, since the sales calls stopped..."0 -

Yes it is more expensive, but no you don't pay a subscription. It is a one off payment for the gadget.
If you want to use the web interface, it is free for the 1st year and then you need to pay to keep using it.
But you don't need the web interface - I never use it.0 -
I bought an answering machine several years back,it dosn't stop them ringing but it does mean I don't have to pick up if I don't recognise the caller or choose not to enter into conversation with the them if they start their spiel .Mostly they hang up when the recording asks them to leave a message, though I have twice come home and played back overseas sounding telesales staff trying to engage the "Lady" in conversation before giving up.
Anyone who knows me also knows that if they don't "speak to the machine" I'm not going to pick the phone up if I'm home and the reason for that. I've never had anyone query that and many now do the same.
I just use the standard message on my machine but you can make your own so I'm sure it would easy enough for Dukesy to come up with a suitable message asking callers to state their business if they want an answer.
My Dad just tells cold callers to Sod Off and hangs up,and I suspect he enjoys doing so however many times a day it happens.0 -
I've registered with TPS and don't often get (or answer) calls - but today two things happened:
1) I got a piece of unsolicited mail that, on opening, was selling Viagra and illustrated with graphic pictures with a tiny black box over the offending appendages - stomach churning!
2) I got a PPI call addressing me by my first name, which I really b*****y object to. Does anybody else find it rude? I replied, "I don't know you.. why are you calling me by my first name?" and the cheeky little madam on the other end said "why are you being so rude to me, I don't have to put up with this..."
Well, quite! So don't work for a company that pays you to harrass people then, and be over-familiar.
It's taken the shine off my day.0 -
OOOH this thread has made me SOOOOOOOOOOOOO mad!!!!!!
Does no-one ever think that most of the people on the other end of the line are just doing their job?
Yes there are scam calls and unwanted sales calls and they can be irritating but not all calls are like that. I've worked in a call centre, (We only called people who had existing business with us) and the agent has NO control over the phone number dialled, this is done by computer selection. So what benefit is there in abusing the agent?
And as for saying no-one should take these jobs......do you expect us to live on benefits??? There are not that many jobs available and people mostly have to take what they can.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -
Re previous poster I don't abuse anyone who calls me from a call centre, if its about PPI or about Microsoft windows tech support then I do string them along, wind them up. Genuine calls I either tell them I'm not interested or I take up the offer but its only for magazine offers which I've had in the past.0

We got Truecall installed to prevent these calls. We haven't had one in a year!0
