I bought one of these call blockers:-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/CPR-Global-CPR104-All-in-One-Blocker/dp/B004BTVQ5E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363980860&sr=8-1

A bit expensive but blocks out all international, unavailable and witheld numbers and 200 known nuisances programmed in. If one gets through because they are using a standard number you can press a button to block them so they can't call back. Very satisfying that one - 'I'm glad you rang as I've just inherited £100,000 that I'd love to invest in your carbon credits. "Click".'

Only downside is that they will also block out others who use witheld numbers eg NHS or have regular calls from abroad, but you can temporarily allow them if you are expecting a call.

This is the big problem for me :( I get regular calls from unknown numbers as I work for the nurse bank, and am often called out of the blue on the offchance that I might be available to cover a shift, so I can't afford to block calls from unknown numbers.

I have absolutely no idea where they've got my number - I never put it on anything. However, as they all also have my name, they must have bought my details from somewhere and can't just be calling random numbers. Gahh!

I find the best thing is to sound interested, then ask them to hold on a moment, then just leave the phone. If you can be bothered, pick it up every few seconds and say: 'I'll be with you in a moment'.

That way you waste a lot more of their time than simply ranting at them for a few moments.

And wasting their time is one thing that will get you removed from their list as if they are holding on for you they can't be harassing someone else.
I also do this, eventually they hang up!! :rotfl:

I have a whistle by the phone, after mumbling quietly and being asked to repeat it, I give a long hard blow of the whistle (which just happens to be the right pitch for a phone to hurt their ear), I ask them politely if they need me to spell it for them, they usually hang up on me for some reason.

I have this and used the little button not half an hour ago "This is an urgent message...." click. Asta la vista suckers!

I don't have withheld blocked but do have international blocked. fortunately most the PPI and such I get these days have a displayed number so easy to block.

The big shame is the banks proposed setting a cut off date for PPI claims be set but they were not allowed. Personally I think everyone has had plenty enough time to claim by now and it would put an end to all these calls after the date expired.

As I keep saying on these forums ...

The good thing is that the telephone system (including the telephone itself) is designed to protect users against acoustic shock. You probably did yourself more harm than you did to the person on the other end of the telephone by using the whistle.

This is to protect against people trying to do physical harm to others over the PSTN. At the very least it protects you against an assault charge.

Not sure how you work out I did myself any harm....far from it......as for the whistle, it works a treat for me, if caller does not like an ear blasting from my whistle, best they not call my number, as they are per MY terms and conditions on MY phone :D.

Get Truecall - more sophisticated than this gadget - Truecall blocks nearly all junk calls but lets all the genuine calls through.

We've had it since last year and it really works.

True, but its more expensive and don't you need to pay a subscription too?

    What I said was

So if the whistle does you no harm ... far from it ... then surely it will not do any harm to the person at the other end of the phone, bearing in mind that the phone system will attenuate any loud noise to safe levels.

In other words it's pointless using a whistle. To the person at the other end of the phone it's just an annoying sound. Why not just hang up?
