my daughter is doing a second degree

her course is only a few hours she was allowed to do so

Don't Masters degrees have to meet some standards? My son did a Masters and it was a year of solid, hard work at uni.

Its her second degree actually, done over 3 years at 2 days a week. And the standards are topnotch thank you.

She hasnt got the job yet - the interview is next week but, im going to tell her to forget it and we will fund her. She has something lined up for when she is fully qualified and has already done some published art work which has helped her to get this position, but, its just funding the degree in the meantime. No, the position cannot offer her a part time job to help, it doesnt work like that.

Whats to say she hasnt already got something lined up? I havent gone into all her circumstances as this is only a forum for advice, im not about to tell you everything now am i?

Yes, things are happening and the cogs are whirling but, in the meantime she was using the jsa to help fund her degree to better herself, which people in this country do not like. Makes you sick.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
JSA is not a free alternative to the maintenance loan!

Well done to her for doing this but public money is better spent in ensuring the majority reach more basic standards (Level 2 Literacy/Numeracy for example) than funding the few to reach elite (e.g. Degree and above) levels. JSA is meant to provide a prop for people who are unable to work rather than a way of someone avoiding full time work to be able to attend university. Perhaps she should have worked in between degrees, saved and then paid her own living expenses?

... and the jsa isnt pocket money, its saved up in her account and used to pay for her degree - why shouldnt she use it that way? Or would you rather she used it for drink/fags and drugs? Maybe she shouldve had a couple of kids by now and be dossing in a council flat with her mates over causing a nuisance all the time, a couple of asbos under her belt too.

Nobody is suggesting she should be spending JSA on those things. That's not what JSA was supposed to be for However, it also wasn't meant to be used as 'free' money to allow an individual to save up. It's supposed to be for people to cover their everyday essential living costs while doing what they can to find work not to allow the funding of another degree while parents cover the living costs. It's a far-from-perfect system and is abused in a lot ways but that doesn't make abusing it ok just because it's for a more 'worthy' cause.

but, as she lives at home we (her parents) cover these for her.

Sounds to me like she is a spoilt princess who is living off mummy and daddy and then topping it up with benefits whilst she "studies" a non-degree.

To my mind that makes her no better than the "typical bums" that you referred to.

We have a government that has let the bankers rob over 1 Trillion from the taxpayers purse. and nobody says a thing.

Yet a young girl would rather do Art than work for mr tesco's and your attacking her for following her dream!! what happened to the empathy in your soul.... where has it gone?

not everyone is born to work as a slave to the tax system. if you are, then thats fine but don't have a go at a free human, striving to improve their quality of life and knowledge.

your all forgetting what it is to be human... thinking that striving and paying bills and taxes is the only way. It is not. you should be ashamed. and never judge a person till you have walked a mile in there shoes.....

also you need to REMEMBER a few home truths.....

economic slavery is exactly the same as slavery.... except some people just can't see it.

Did you forget that slavery is illegal? forcing someone to work for you is slavery. (yes the government and tesco are the same)

anyone remember what facism is?? its when the state is taken over by corporations - (you should look into that).

if the banksters had not nicked all our money, this young girl would be getting a student GRANT to pursue her dreams. LIKE MANY OF YOU DID.

All i'm saying is that the media and this government are playing the divide and rule strategy (again) poor against poorer in this case.

and you lot have fallen for it. so hang your head in shame and go and help a homeless person. because when it all gets really bad. the people who were protecting the banks and there puppets in government will be shunned and hated the most.

repent now and save your souls!!

No one is attacking the lady for following her dream. The negative comments have related to the OP's overwhelming sense of entitlement.

Fine if she wants to study then she can pay for it rather than leeching from the tax payers (of which I would assume you are one).

I studied both a BSc and an MBA in my own time with my own money, whilst working full time. I did it because I wanted to improve my earning capability and not some made up notion of being a benefit to the country.
