Wipe down surfaces, hoover all floors and scrub bathroom and kitchen.
Clean linen in their room if they are staying.
    Nothing else matters.

I'd say go through hallway, lounge and kitchen, tidying away what you can in 20 mins (maybe set the oven timer). When the time's up, chuck any remaining clutter in a box and hide in a bedroom :D.

Now it'll be easy to vacuum all the floors and surfaces ;) Then wipe down your kettle, kitchen work surfaces and floor.

Vacuum bathroom, scrub loo, sink, bath and work surface. Shine taps and towel rail. Put out a new towel.

    Have a cuppa.

(Sort out anything you chucked in a box now if you have time, else after they've gone ;) )

Kitchen and bathroom, clean bed linen if they are staying overnight, please no air freshener just open the windows every day perhaps whilst you are cleaning (I get hot! :p).

  • I always start by plugging in a new air freshener, into the plug socket by the entrance door. Nothing better than walking into a nice smelling house. ...

Now, you see, that always puts me right off :p as they give me awful migraines very quickly! I agree about the nice- smelling house, of course, but you can do the coffee or baking cakes trick that you use when you're selling houses.

A tip I read years ago and liked is to polish the silverware in the bathroom- taps, door handles, plugs etc. The extra light shining off those makes the rest of the room look clean, much like what londonsurrey says up there ^^ about windows and mirrors.

I sometimes notice dust in homes I'm visiting and do find it reassuring that other people live like I do :D rather than in some pristine, magazine- worthy showhome.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

The one thing I really notice in other people's houses is whether the bathroom is clean - so the loo itself, the sink and that strip of sealant round the bath that some people seem to leave to go a bit mouldy if you know what I mean. And the thing I really really hate is when I have to dry my hands on a damp towel, it just turns my stomach when I wonder why it's damp

Then in the kitchen, clear as much stuff as possible off the worktops (hide it in the cupboards) so it doesn't look cluttered, and give the kitchen sink and good old shine and the whole room will look better.

Agree with making the house smell nice but I prefer scented oil in a little burner, as I think air freshener and especially those plug in ones smell really artificial and a bit unpleasant.
  • Make sure the loo and the bed are clean.

I'm another one that doesn't like the artificial smell from plug-ins and sprays... they smell 'off' to me and always make me wonder what other smell the person is trying to cover up... a bit like when you get in a taxi and just know that the really strong air freshener is probably masking BO or vomit...;) and not just there for the added enjoyment of the customer.
