I agree, I get quite concerned reading some of the other threads.

I'm not afraid to put a jumper on if it's a bit chilly, but I won't sit here and freeze.

From reading some posts, I feel wildly profligate for having the central heating on at all
I read a post on a recent thread in which the poster said they kept their heating on low and offered visiting guests blankets if they felt a bit chilly. People do the strangest things :D
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • I don't see any point in sitting around in blankets unless you have no choice, that is miserable. But neither do I expect to sit around in a strappy tee-shirt when it's freezing outside, like a friend of mine does! One must have a happy medium, imho.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I read some of these posts last evening, just before I went to bed! Got so concerned about dying in the night that I left my central heating on.

Woke up at 4am, boiling hot and couldn't get back to sleep.

Back to normal tonight I think!

I can't have any heating on in the bedroom or I get a blinding migraine. Freezing or migraine? Give me freezing any day.

  • it isn`t on in the bedroom, when we are in bed. It is on, if needed, to ensure that the temperature prior to getting into bed is 18. Body temperature from two of us ensures that it does not go below that. Getting hot at night can be a sign of other things, the obvious being women of a certain age, illness, bedding and mattress that do not breathe etc

we have a single woollen duvet each, next to each other and sleep on wool filled mattress covers. Cosy and comfy the whole night and sleep like a log
pricey but brilliant and we would rather use any spare cash while we can, we earned it

How these people who never use heating, but just wrap in blankets, manage I don't know.

You have to be warm first, to keep warm. A cold blanket on a cold person is no use at all!

I still have memories of waiting outside school, after trips to Stratford, for pupils to be collected. Always one late!

I was so cold I could not warm the duvet!

But the air betwen your body and the blanket soons gets warm.

You may *feel* cold, but your body temperature is still considerably higher than the surrounding air and soon warms it when trapped under a blanket. (I know, I live in a house with no Central heating , just a couple of storage heaters, not yet both turned on for the winter, so rely on my furry throw to keep warm)

Clearly some people don't mind worse heating conditions than those of a mediaeval peasant. Not aimed at anyone in particular - just saying.

"to switch the heating off at night and on in the mornings" - always a family discussion at this time of year - cheaper/uses less energy to keep the heat at a constant minimum level rather than let the house get clap cold overnight and start again next day?
    Never found an answer.

The answer is insulation. I can get up at 3.00am, put on a dressing gown, go downstairs and watch TV and fall asleep. The thermostat is set at 19C and goes off at 2200 hrs.
The only thing that is constant is change.

Well, I swear by a good hot water bottle, as long as my feet feel warm when I get into bed, then the rest of me always seems fine. (apart from last night of course)
