Friend of mine is visiting from Korea next week. I'm really excited, I haven't seen her for years and years and years. She has a super great career now. She hasn't met DH but is going to meet him in London for a coffee then get the train here just for the afternoon,

    Perhaps she's seen Bruv!

Ask her if she's seen an 6 ft 3 fair-haired 27 year old English teachers lately.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Then yes, it's a reasonable question. We ask our prospective pupils / tenants something similar - "why do you want to come to this Chambers?"

If they then say, "I want to do insolvency / employment / personal injury law" we can have a good guess they've not even looked at our website (-:

If they talk about wanting to do extradition, immigration, public law or crime, and then give some examples of cases, at least they know what we do.

How about 'I've heard it is a good place to snare a wife/husband likely to be earning enough to put any kids we have through private school and keep me in the manner to which I would like to become accustomed'
    I think....

I bet he's popular with Korean girls :)

Still in the dark about my indoor water feature, last contact was 11.30am yesterday.

IMO you are being too patient. I'd be on the blower pretty insistently now. 48 hours without water is too long IMO.

DW's dad passed away between the time I asked him for permission to ask her to marry me and the actual wedding. Despite the sadness of his passing, I'm glad he knew I'd be marrying her.

Just realised that maybe nobody does that now but that's the way we did things in the 80s.

    We did that.

Mr S asked my dad in May 1982, and we agreed to get engaged when my brother returned from the Falklands conflict. Unfortunately dad died in July and brother was brought home due to that. We never did get engaged, I have no ring.:( We did get married 15 months later.

An NVQ Level 2-3 is about equivalent to writing your name at the top of a CSE paper used to mean.

You joke. Some of friends kids, who weren't up to to academic A levels, did CACHE courses (basic nursery nursing) and GNVQ level 3s, which are supposedly equiv to A levels. I've not known one to not get 3 As in the NVQs. Some universities, mostly mets but Birmingham Uni for some courses, accepts them as equivalent. They are now graduating!

I think the "uni"s deliberately take them in the knowledge that after a few weeks it will be obvious they can't cope, at which point they are transferred to courses where there were not enough applicants. It would explain why their FB status 3 years ago was "psychology at XX" and now is "degree in child development observation".

DH didn't ask my father's permission.

I wouldn't have wanted him too.

    It wasn't 'appropriate'.

There was a sort of a weirder thing way at the beginning of our relation ship with DH and someone I had been in an open relationship with before....

In the process of interviewing for jobs here again. Have interviewed 4/9 people so far- all were awful and unappointable and these were the best applicants out of a total of over 100. It's so depressing that we can't find people who are intelligent enough to read our website and think up a good answer to the question "why do you want this job".

If you were a local authority, the answer would be simple: "I want a simple job, as I'm not at all bright or hard-working."

Maybe we should advertise the roles as apprenticeships instead.

As you are (now) the FCA: the answer is mostly I want a simple job, as I'm not at all bright or hard-working.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

All of those answers would have been better than some of the stumbling nonsense that has been served up.

For a professional role I expect people to have some kind of basic interest in the subject matter to and to be able to justify why they would want to leave their old job and come here or alternatively be able to construct a convincing lie that they have some kind of basic interest in the subject matter.

Everyone attending an interview knows they will be asked that question so not preparing an answer demonstrates that you are either stupid or couldn't be bothered to prepare.

Let me explain. I was vaguely interested in the Financial Ombudsman Service, as I keep having to represent clients in front of them, and I thought "I could do a better job than their adjudicators".

Heck! I thought that I could sort their whole operation out nicely.

BUT I CBA to go on the two-hour journey to their offices for the pretty basic salary they are offering for basic adjudicators. This means that, if they are offering internal promotion for higher-paid jobs, they must have a pretty ropey pool of people to choose from, and they are not offering higher-paid roles outside the organisation.

I do some investigative analysis work and I can't believe someone going for a high paid job in that field wouldn't look up the organisation's website. Then you'd imagine that they'd look for information on that field in general, plus checking you out on LinkedIn, seeing if any of you had appeared in the press/journals etc. Pfft... This is depressing.
