Yes, that's my interpretation of the available interweb data too. It's a long half-life isotope (119days) because they want to see how quickly your body eliminates it, so it needs to stay radioactive for long enough for them to scan you when they give it to you and again a week later. You're supposed to retain it unless there's something wrong with you making you lose more bile than you should. So yes, the poo that you produce during that time will remain radioactive for months.

But, as Nikkster says, the dose is very very low, and by the time it's been diluted by the water recycling, it'll be negligible compared with natural background radiation anyway. Swimming in the cake will probably still expose you to less radiation than going to a granite area like Cornwall, or eating lots of bananas or something. I wouldn't have thought it would be worth the trouble of getting a portaloo.

    Thanks.

    :o:)

Its all all a bit of a surprise this stuff. :)

I wouldn't be worried about giving lir a cuddle (before or after radioactivity :)), I don't think the fluffies need to worry either (all said from a semi-informed point of view).

OTOH, the plane presumably becomes more or less valueless over its lifetime. So, at some point he has to write off the £25k. That has to be added to the £450 a year cost you mentioned. Even so, it sounds an *extremely* cheap way to fly.

Depends on the type of aircraft.

The traditional training school fodder is older C152 and C172. The airframes will go on forever and are relatively student-proof, but the engines need to be rebuilt periodically, usually around 2000 hours or so depending on type, and that is very expensive. In the region of £15K to £20K is not uncommon.

In addition to that you need a check/service every 50 hours from a licensed mechanic to keep it legal, and a more in-depth and more expensive check every (I think 150 hours from memory) as well.

And then on top of the mechanical stuff, you've got periodic Avionics updates and servicing, which can get expensive if it's full-IFR equipped.

Which is why you can often buy the same type of 30 year old small aircraft for £50,000 if you want to, or an almost identical one for £20,000 if you want to. The difference is mostly just a matter of where in the lifecycle of engine hours and maintenance schedule it is, combined with how current the avionics are.

Beyond that, there's insurance (expensive), fuel costs @ 30-40 litres per hour, landing fees at many airports of £10 to £25 a pop, hangering costs, etc.

Flying is prohibitively expensive in the UK, and I'm very surprised (and a tad jealous) Mr NDG has found such a great deal.

To put the difference in perspective, I've just calculated the costs of hiring a plane for an hour, going up, and doing a half dozen touch and go circuits at my local airport here, with the costs of doing so in the USA.

    Aberdeen - Aircraft hire (wet) for one hour @ £125, first landing free, additional landings at £24 x 5 = £120 -- Total = £245.

USA - Aircraft hire (wet) for one hour @ $80, no landing fees, Total = $80 or around £55.

Now yes, you could find an airport elsewhere with cheaper landing fees, or just fly around in circles instead of practicing landings and takeoffs, so it's probably a worst case example, but illustrative none the less.

Are you familiar with Simon's Cat, spirit?

    I am.

The last time she 'moused' me she moused my nose and left a painful scratch in my nostril.

When I went back to bed, the cat was stratched out asleep on my side of the bed and reluctant to move. My negotiating with the cat skills needs enhancing.

Depends on the type of aircraft.

Sorry, meant to quote the bit about being prohibitively expensive.

This is why DH plays with the big ones instead. Though at this point in time, whether you would see playing with Dreamliners as more fun is probably a moot point.

Just been sorting out my hard drive for the last hour.... got a "low on disk space" error, which meant I had to ensure the recycle bin was emptied, search for big files I didn't think I needed, run disk cleanup, run CCleaner, reboot a couple of times..... still not enough spare for a defrag though. Currently C: is 23GB, with 1.88GB spare. Defrag would like 15%, tried running it anyway, which it did, but didn't make much difference.

When I search for "all big files" there's stuff in there I wish I could just delete.... but it's probably system files :)

Can you not buy a portable hard drive (or even USB sticks go up to 32GB nowadays).

OH now has a 4TB network server for our home, so backups are not a problem.

Daughter completed 10K Race for life this morning. She ran it for our friend and had printed a picture of her the have pinned on the back of her tee shirt.

This was something from the heart. She has said little about how she feels but I know how much friend meant to her.

Friends husband was with us .At every point we saw her she was beaming. Her smile said it all.

It was hot and she did it in 1hr 14.

A small event but one that will stick in our family story, and I have never been more proud of her than I feel today.

Surely, he now has the major problem of backing up the 4TB server?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

No idea to be honest. Maybe he's got 2 x 2TB drives mirroring each other?
