Ouch! Hope the foot's OK - the ceiling clearly isn't.....
How old is your house, LIR?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

How old is your house, LIR?
We don't know exactly how old it is. (We don't care to dig too much ATM into how old it is) The site is old, but the name and building certainly is not original. The front renovation was done in 17something or other, the Georgian part, half of which fell down, but that was a renovation to an older building (you can just see a wider, lower window shape, but still brick). Dh read arch and anth. His arch tutor is still a good mate, and is suggesting some first years come and dig some time when we have our major structural elements in place. This seems sensible. We know nothing we do is going to damage anything 'sensational' partly because we are disturbing nothing that hasn't been disturbed in recent history and partly because its not a 'sensational' sort of property.
We think that room is a much altered oldest part of the house.0 -
Dashing by after a few days away and as ever no chance of catching up with everyone, hope veryone is well.
I just prefer aerosols to stick/roll-on things, admittedly none are scent-free but I choose ones that are (supposed) to smell 'fresh' rather than something floral. Given the amount of diesel we get through in a week, squirts of aerosol are not going to make much difference to my lack of a green footprint!
That looks as if it could have been painful,lir!0 -
Problem is I react like this only occasionally, whereas all 3 men in this house use aerosol deodorants at least once a day.
They refuse to use roll-ons. It's a hair issue apparently.
Surely it is a respect issue? It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I can see both sides here. If the men really feel this is the thing that works they may feel its a respect issue to those they interact with to use it.
I wouldn't like it either I have to say. Things like that's here get done in the bathroom with the window open.0 -
I've put my foot through a ceiling when the electrician had the floor boards up. It was the builders all going red in the face whilst trying not to laugh that got to me.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

I'm panicking a bit about what we do about that ceiling now (haven't spoken to nice builder...not sure he even knows yet) (and though the ceiling is old and it hurts to lose it because of that it had to go anyway because the timbers above are in a bad state and the who
E lot will be lost if we cannot treat the timbers. Just....with the increased costs for the bathroom we had put that room on the back burner.
Otoh, I am relatively relaxed because the most important thing is no one gets hurt and stuff like that while not pretty won't actually cause any problem.
I'm currently more annoyed about the fact I seem to have sprained my thumb, or have hurt it some how, plus with the continued breakdown of the old bod I'm struggling to find many working bits left :rotfl:.0 -

To be fair to them, I only badly react occasionally. They do make sure that they are not in the same room as me when spraying (more an issue for OH than the kids) and they do open the window and close the door afterwards.
I think it only happens when my detectors are already on alert eg hay fever season. I'm sure if I reacted three times a day they would be concerned.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Didn't CFCs get banned years ago? I thought they were the main concern for the ozone layer? (Just thought - we don't hear so much about that any more do we? its all greenhouse gasses and global warming/ climate change since we realised we're not going to become a desert, more of a swamp!)0 -

I have a friend who's child (3) has severe asthma. The whole family (including siblings) have moved away from aerosols. I know his gran has bottles of pump action air freshener which she found, as opposed to aerosols.
This is your health & well being for goodness sake. These are your nearest & dearest. Does it mean that little to them that they can't make a very minor adjustment to their lives?
As I understand it (which is a lot more than 8 months ago...) she would be better not spraying anything at all. In terms of aerosols v pumps, I think the difference is less to do with the propellant itself, more to do with it making a better dispersion of all the other things in the product. But its the other ingredients that are likely to be the actual problem.
That's just my understanding though.
Personally, I can't stand 'air freshener' type things. For the sake of completeness I also prefer roll on deodorants too, mainly because when I have used spray ones they feel coldand in my head they don't give as good coverage (aka I have a bad aim!)
