I wonder of you could let me know two things...any particular jazz standard you might recognise and know two or three words to, or the name of, and also what you think might be a favourite song (of any genre) in a demographic of say, fifty or sixty year olds plus.....

Hi lir, most people I know in the age group who like jazzy music are also partial to Bacharach and David. In terms of Jazz, the age of bossa nova, One Note Samba, the Girl from Ipanema.

Personally I also like jazz a bit harder than that. Art Blakey's a Night in Tunisia, or more beatnik, like Coming Home Baby (prefer that to Sinatra type standards. What about people like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, etc? I also love Mark Murphy's version of Down St Thomas Way, a happy song, but that's more obscure.

That's what's in my jazz head today. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll have kicked that lot out and there'll be something new occupying the same space.

That's great, Girl from ip already on the list, confirms we are getting it right. Plus, its a favourite for me too. :D. Don't know down st Thomas way, so will check with dh :). :o. (Dh is on the phone and now wants to know why he didn't talk jazz with you when we all met;))

The 'divas' are certainly more than welcome to feature, exactly this sort of thing. Things that people know at least a little.

Edit...yeah...burt bac. .....that, like Beatles is potentially a real winner.

    Glenn millers in the mood?

Viva, I've seen numerous funny tshirts, but haven't the nerve to wear them. Most are not np tshirts either...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Casablanca: As Time Goes By. That appeals to my generation. There are some other great songs in that film - try Knock On Wood.

Not nice t shirts are a sure way to stay single. Men who think they are wags because they can wear a dirty word or innuendo rarely are. Now, men who talk dirty in appropriate situations on the other hand.....and don't snigger at the dirty words or innuendo ...well, that's another thing. :)

In the mood is perfect demographically (50 to 60s will be the youngest) :). Won't work with the instrument line up. Which is ...unconventional.

We are hoping to encourage a younger demographic in future years, but need to do this softly softly and not scare off the current crowd. There is lots of trad jazz out here, but ........

    It's a five year plan.

Etta James, I'd rather go blind... Though not really something you can play in the background.

More crossover, how about What's Going On by Marvin Gaye? One of the greatest songs ever.

    I have a T-shirt that says:
    [STRIKE]I'm someone [/STRIKE]
    who cares about
    your problems
    [STRIKE]and likes to help[/STRIKE]

    DW does not approve.

As time goes by is beautiful. I think this could work with some thought.

Fwiw GDB, 'your generation' seems to be 10 -20 years older in mind set often out here. They often seem to aspire to be their parents...in all tastes.
