Totally apropos of nothing. I visited one of my fave pub chains yesterday and had a banknote rejected. Same happened a few months back. And in the petrol station saw a customer describing how he'd been given a forged note from a fare. Has anyone else had any problems with forged notes recently. Bof E tenner and oddly enough a fiver (I thought it wasn't worthwhile forging smaller notes but there you go).

Yes, there are loads in circulation at the moment. I haven't had to reject any but our bank has asked us to check every single note. The thing is, they used to be high denom but now they are smaller values too. You can get a special pen to check all the notes given you. I tend to hold up any notes I'm given while in the shop to check for a watermark. I get some strange looks, but hey, they are quick enough to do the same back. I've not heard of forged fivers yet, but that isn't to say they aren't in circulation. There are lots of forged £1 coins, often their milling is wrong or the obverse and reverse don't line up so easy to tell.

Nice people, can I ask a favour?

Its a bit random but I am suffering inspiration failure today. It helps that there are few jazz aficionados here for this one and a mixed age group.

I wonder of you could let me know two things...any particular jazz standard you might recognise and know two or three words to, or the name of, and also what you think might be a favourite song (of any genre) in a demographic of say, fifty or sixty year olds plus.....

It doesn't matter that the two seem disparate. It makes sense to what I am doing ATM.

Edit, one of your absolute favourite any genre tunes might help too......I have told dh I will help transcribe, and as I find transcribing music even harder than typing written language it's gonna take me ages.

    ... jazz aficionados
    Off the hook here....

I've never liked jazz.... the mere mention of the word fills me with horror (similarly Ceilidh). When I hear the word "jazz" ONE thought and visual goes through my mind.... a comedy sketch where a chap's sitting on a stool listening to jazz, then turns to the camera (as he is a show host) and says into the camera "niiiiice".

    :)

Look at me with my first double quote! :)

Right, looking at the top bit ... I don't know what a jazz standard is, nor did I know jazz had words.

A ... song, of any genre, for 50-60: We all live in a yellow submarine.... My names Jack and I live in the back.... Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.... Wild Thing, you make my heart sing....

    Er .... run out now.

Edit: Oh ... the Beach Boys.

    .

Thanks, I had not even thought of the beatles:o.

    Jazz standard....

Well, jazz is huge.....having been around for a century. Jazz standards are the sort of things you expect all jobbing jazz musos to know. So, you would include in that the thing that sets all musicians teeth on edge ' something by Sinatra', lots of the major broadway musical hits ...most have had successful jazz renditions, many of which are 'standards'. Lots of blues would be considered, and even some pop. Dh would include a lot of the music Michaels likes as 'of jazz roots' and so if its broad enough to be known to a wide audience he would say a musician worth their salt should be able to play it.

A broad way to cut this definition might be 'if they sand or played it in an old movie' chances are its a jazz standard buy all definitions.

Edit: far from not likening jazz, you might find, by its broadest definition you like some of it ;). Fwiw I hate lots of it.....I wouldn't go as far as most......but a lot of it. I do not like what I call 'mad bee music' nor 'no tune' music nor 'needs a head doctor' music or 'should have learnt to count time before playing with others music' These are all technical terms I use when talking to my husband. :). Thankfully he shares my taste, though protests he can appreciate all those types of jazz. I think he's just trying to appear superior. ;)

Actually thinking about it the Beatles is inspired. Till there was you would work, and of course.....was a jazz song (whistling smiley), and has made the long list. Help might also appeal to the listeners....( I think most people can place the word help) and hide your love away would work prettily with the particular instruments. Hmm, on the long list. Only one can really make it, but .......I wouldn't have to transcribe ANY of these ......it's all done and we have it all....laziness really loves this!
