I had a rhubarb dilemma earlier in the week...
Bought a fair amount of rhubarb yogurt on Monday (see story about misplacing credit and nectar cards), then there a huge amount of rhubarb really cheap in waitrose (see post about mental effort and meals). In the end I decided that was more that enough rhubarb for one week and didn't buy any real rhubarb. Good call - the yogurt is very rhubarby and pretty sharp.
And thank you for the birthday wishes. I feel I still haven't achieved proper adulthood. No sudden enlightenment or burst of maturity. Wish I knew when that all happens. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Nope it happens to me as well already. And I'm 53 . For about another 5 minutes
Happy Birthday Zag

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I feel today has been vaguely productive, I have installed a new printer (as usual it was cheaper to buy a new one than buy ink for the old one) and claimed the manufacturer cashback, I have fixed the knocking from the car suspension so it no longer sounds as if the wheels are falling off, I have put new stabilisers on DS bike (the old ones are suffering metal fatigue and keep bending over), drawn up some floor plans for both properties for the architect, sorted out my account at an online PC bits supplier (the forgotten password email address they had was taken away from me by altavista about 10 years ago) and spoken to a couple of mortgage companies and probably come to a conclusion re mortgages.
However I have been unable to find the power adaptor for the old printer I wanted to send in for a 'recycle' cashback payment and I have spent a fair bit of time in the garage and shed which is depressing as there is so much junk that needs sorting out, I feel that my life would be so much more content if it were de-cluttered.I think....0 -
I'm never even slightly tempted by rhubarb. I keep on imagining oxalic acid poisoning and all the metal levels in my bloodstream crashing. Any fruit that has to be dipped in sugar to become edible's not really a fruyit IMHO. Well there's also the fact that it's plainly a plant stem rather than a real fruit but never mind.:D

I fully anticipate never achieving adulthood. My wisdom teeth have been making very gradual moves over the past at least 10 years, so I don't suppose I'll ever be wise either
Wikipedia tells me that its only the leaves you have to be worried about for oxalic acid.
Whenever I've bought rhubarb, I've steamed/ boiled in a couple of mm water with dash of sugar (upped to taste). Rhubarb is deeelsih0 -

Eat pudding in front of Pretty Woman (with gin+ pineapple juice left over from pineapple upsidedown cake + flat lemonade)
= Happy (unproductive and childless) Nikkster
Though I did have a good look at my accounts today... been feeling a little angsty about spending a lot this month (various things), then realised that last payday I'd stashed away more than my mum earns in a month. Won't feel so borrowing a bit of it back now0 -
Rhubarb freezes really well. We often give most of ours away as we don't really like it all that much. I can tolerate it for about 3-4 things a year and that's it
Shame it's so prolific in the allotment!
Fruit as a savoury.....
Rhubarb cooked with five spice and some other stuff ( thing it's a bbc recipe) as a side to salmon is outrageously Good.
I love rhubarb. It's just all the sweetening it needs that's a problem.0 -

Apart from the savory rhubarb recipes:D. I prefer it 'baked'. The pieces stay whole and can be used on top of a tart ( my absolute favourite might be rhubarb tart.....maybe. ) or if desired used under a crumble topping or similar. The syrup created is undilute and frangrantly seductive and deliciously pink. Just rhubarb in a Pyrex and a bit of sugar on top. In the oven and an eye kept on it for the moment when the pieces are whole but melting, not hard, but not so soft you cannot arrange them decoratively.0 -
Feeling very 'wifey' this morning. Catering to his every whim. Dh had his ribs last night. (And there is enough left over to feed him again with left overs.....I don't know how to reheat them) then this morning he got freshly made waffles, with hulled strawberries and vanilla cream, after a plate of smoked makeral.
We ate outside at the kitchen table (we have left it set as it would be in the kitchen, candles, a couple of pots of rosemary, napkins....so we just had to shuffle out there and sit down. It's like sitting in a stages set from a magazine editorial (if only the garden were a great setting ATM) .....woefully impractical. It's rather chilly out there this morning so I sat wrapped in a blanket.
I also realise I have over committed chores this weekend. We have a third of the field left to poo pick, and I really want to make a clear path through the junk room that was our bedroom so that if I am sore next week I can get about from bed to clothes and bathroom easily.
Also not thrilled about next weekend when we have to move more furniture around for the painter (decided not to paint the kitchen ourselves.....ceiling too high for me, and would take dh too long) but dh will not be here to put it back with me, so might have to live in chaos kitchen for a week.0 -
