I think there are lots of allergy and auto-immune disorders that develop in teenage years, or later.

The elder of my younger sisters was diagnosed as a Coeliac when she was in her late 20s, and other auto-immune conditions such as MS are usually diagnosed in 20s / 30s / even later.

Haven't time to read much - will catch up later this evening. Just wanted to ask a quick question, though:

Do any of the NP who are dyslexic, or parents/teachers of dyslexic people, know of any resources about best practice for setting/streaming dyslexic students? I have a meeting tomorrow afternoon with DS's school's senco, and want some data and/or official policy advice to back up my request for DS's sets next year to be decided on the basis of his actual ability in each subject, rather than his current capacity to write things down. Thanks.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Try the BDA's document about best practice in schools, specifically, p.30 where it says:

    Programmes of learning.

    • Pupils work in a variety of groupings (including opportunities to work in mixed ability
groups) as well as working with an adult in groups. Care is taken to ensure that pupils’ cognitive ability is taken into account in any setting or streaming system so that teaching presents dyslexic pupils with an appropriate level of cognitive challenge.

Those vets cannot get enough of me, a difficult horse with a mild choke today. :) I learnt a new trick from the vet about dislodging a choke.

I have tried but can't. Essentially in Australia, a sleepout is a broad, covered verandah. Sorry, you probably know that as you lived there too. The posh ones can have doors that open out and flyscreens, though many are just porches that you can sleep on. When I was a kid, our one had flyscreens but nothing else. It was a bit like this, but less exposed (only one side open) and with flyscreens, we'd move the beds out there when it was hot and all sleep out, not quite under the stars. It was lovely:

Obviously that's not practical for our weather, so it's probably easier to imagine having a rear extension with one whole wall of bifold doors, so that the room can be either an outdoor (verandah style) with the doors open or indoor space with the doors closed. My plan was to have this with one or two velux type windows in order to give light. Something like this, though this is a proper extension and more of a heavy structure than I would like:

I want it to have a lighter and airier appearance than this.

I don't think I'd be able to have what I want as it would be built of wood and not meet UK building regs, so I'm looking for a way of crossing together the two elements above. It's a shame I don't have a pic of my old house as it would describe it perfectly.

ETA: this is the type of sleepout my uncle has on his house in Qld, sorry, can't isolate the specific image but is on this page. It doesn't have floor to ceiling windows, but does have a wall of windows that open.

No need to apologise. If I really knew what you were on about I wouldn't be asking. I lived in suburban Sydney for a year when I was 6, that's all, so my recollections of Aussie residential architecture are pretty limited.

I hope you are able to get something that will be close enough to what you want to fit the bill. It wouldn't suit me. My priority is to have ways of being indoors but in the sunshine, so the idea of being outdoors but covered by a roof wouldn't be my thing. I can see why it appeals to you, though.

Thanks NDG. I've got that printed out now ready to take with me. Anybody else got anything to add to it?

Nothing useful probably, but if there is fear he cannot take notes in class fast enough etc can he be armed with a dictaphone? We use these all the time , and we file them and only transcribe what we need. Having a recorded version for revision or to take class notes from at a cope able pace might be useful?

That's a great idea - its a while since I've been at school :), but if they use powerpoint/ something similar could he ask for a copy of the notes to annotate rather than having to take his own notes?

The more useful part of my post - all the best, Lydia. Must be really frustrating being set lower than your true ability, just because the way you process/ output the information is different to the majority.

    There are indeed.
It also works the other way too, that a lot of people 'grow out' of their childhood allergies.

Each area has to produce a special needs inclusion statement under the special educational needs and disabilities act 2001, and IMHO asking for a copy of that is a good place to start.
