    Apparently not.

My DD has just bought a chapter in a PDF. Don't know if that is possible.

OK, then, from a moral point of view, I think it's a bit iffy, personally. But I don't feel strongly about it.

Yes, me too. Also, I think if she was really comfortable with it, she would just do it rather than asking about it. The fact that she's asking means that she doesn't really think it's OK. Aren't there any other libraries nearer you where she could read it?
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Moral maze for the NPs. I received this email from my DD:

"Would it be really immoral to buy a book off amazon, quote a few
pages, then return it? I could have got it from my library and can go
to IOE library to read it otherwise, and it's not a book I would
    otherwise have bought. Your thoughts?"

She knows perfectly well what the answer is, but in mitigation the book is £25, she's a trainee teacher, and she needs it just for one assignment.

    What would you advise?

People who work in libraries know what books get stolen. The most common theft is of true crime. But a surprising number of teaching, nursing and law text books get nicked.

I'm not suggesting that your daughter would steal a book. But much worse than what is being suggested happens. I couldn't bring myself to do it mind. Can she get a second hand one through Abe Books or Better World Books, or similar?

ETA: university libraries should have reciprocal agreements, but they involve going to the library and studying rather than taking items away AFAIU.

Who is the seller? A person or a large org?

The 'crime' is the same but the hardship to the seller is greater to the small seller from being ripped off.

I would not encourage this action...if she needs the book you can afford to help her...and that level of parental support is less demeaning than scamming someone. She can sell it on afterwards.

Curiously enough, no, it is not less grief. She's at uni in Kent, but she's with us in London at the moment. Amazon will deliver in a day for nothing (we have Amazon Prime), and they will pay for return postage too.

That has nothing to do with the moral side of things, but from a purely practical point of view it really is very straightforward to order it and then return it.

Does she have a university student id? Then the British Library will let her in for free, she can read the book and no problems.

Otherwise, find an academic library here

I'd try to find a "look inside" copy on Amazon, then look for an illegal download PDF.

Other than that I'd go to the library.

Too much faff/responsibility and waiting to get it from Amazon, then treat it with kid gloves and then have to package it up again and feel guilty while posting it back.

Thanks. I knew it existed but didn't know how it worked. That's useful as I can refer students there. By and large we have little to do with uni libraries.

Sorry, but you're completely wrong. On two counts:
1] There is NO SUCH THING as too much giant yorkshire or sausage.
2] You omitted piles of hot mashed potato.

If you'd added potato instead of poofy spinach you'd have not had these problems that you've brought upon yourself through inadequate understanding of COMFORT FOOD GORGING!!!

That's what I meant :) Do google do previews too?

Last suggestions from me: do they have an 'e-library' where she is studying? I'm sure mine has books as well as journals. If there are quotes she knows she wants, I'd try a google for the key words and see what comes up, e.g if anyone else has cited/ quoted.
