Friend put his flat in balham on the market a few days ago for about 20% more than he paid for it 2 years ago. Already under offer at asking before the agent could even get it on to rightmove. Nuts. It's not as if there is a shortage of 2 bed flats in that area either...

Prices seem to be creeping up here again too. I have a friend at work who's hoping to move in the autumn, so we've been looking on RM together. Nuts is the right word.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Ndg, when people ask me about cars and I sort of don't get it I just say the colour of the nice car.

Is cream an acceptable answer here?:o:). I have some pearls, ones that sound like number 2 in your list. and some flat gold ones. (Necklace and earrings). I don't think I would 'appreciate' expensive pearls, but I just don't know. Pearls to me have been what one wears for decency until the evening. Oh, I have string f seed pearls too, forgot them....never wear them.

    OK!

    These are natural-coloured rice-shaped middle-range freshwater pearls:

These are high-quality naturally-coloured lavender freshwater pearls, set in silver:

These are small freshwater pearls, with 8mm amethysts:

These are very, very high-quality freshwater pearls, mixed natural colours:

These are Tahitian pearls, baroque, dark green with overtones of pale green, red, and silver:

I'll try to take some photos of akoyas and coin pearls tomorrow (you have to have natural daylight to photograph pearls).

I thought it was the contradictory requirements for the design of the human female pelvis of large baby head and bipedalism. I was under the impression that it wasn't to do with bipedalism being recent, though, and that the compromise was already about as good as it was likely to get.

As a mother, I am also extremely glad I'm not a spotted hyena either, after reading that.
There was a recent Scientific American article (yup that's the kind of household we are!) that looked at whether we could evolve to be more intelligent and the answer was pretty much NO.

We can't grow bigger heads and still get born, and we can't pack more processing power into the same sized head so we've hit the wall.

Mind you many other species of animals have mutants that live up to three times longer than normal. Having extra Superoxide dismutase will do that. But for us it shortens our life (as in Down Syndrome).

We live between 2-3 times as long as the chimps and bonobos we're derived from, so we're pretty much the long-lived mutant superchimps from our family. I do wonder where this could all lead. This is really the biology century.

Unless we get into serious genetics we're the most highly-evolved animals in our corner of the universe and will remain at this level.

there's a nasty rate of incidence of hideous childbirth injuries in places like Ethiopia, where [STRIKE]women[/STRIKE] girls tend to be rather small, having been malnourished when growing, and to get married off and start reproducing at an obscenely young age. It's not a good thing to go into labour with a large baby, a small pelvis, and the nearest doctor five day's walk away.

Maternal mortality rates are also horrific in Afghanistan, for very similar reasons. Plus the Taliban thinking that women working as nurses / midwives is wrong, and so is men seeing women in the indecency of childbirth.

And still nothing is coming up for sale in my preferred areas. Which probably means that when something finally does crop up it'll be expensive and go quickly. This wasn't how it was supposed to be!

I just looked up the temperature. Diamond will ignite at around 800°C.

My thought was whether you could find a fireproof safe that would withstand the same temperatures as the diamonds. :)

Edit: It seems you might, as steel melts at around 1400C (depending on the particular type of steel).
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I'm in the UK for the end of June/start of July.

Happy to meet any Nice People that're around London/SE. I'll be in the SW for a few days too and in Northern France for 2 days

If you fancy a curry at the Indian restaurant (discussed a few threads back) I'd be up for it. Ndg likes it and maybe some others would too. It'd be good to see some NPs in real life.

(I've met at least one NP in real life. I think he's met some others. You've all got the wit to PM him to check whether he thinks I'm Hannibal Lecter.)

I think this is one of the more "real" threads. Not offended if anyone decides either way. :)

    Interesting. Thanks zag.

Even if it were possible, there's no evolutionary pressure for us to evolve to be more intelligent. All over the world, number of offspring per woman are lower amongst the more intelligent and/or more educated, and the generations are further apart too. So we not selecting for intelligence at all.

Nikkster, I remember when I was house hunting despairing of ever finding anything I liked that I could afford. But eventually I did. And so will you. I certainly feel a lot more confident about you finding the right house than about me finding the right bloke!

Last time we arranged to meet up IRL, we decided it was better to make the actual arrangements more privately than the actual NPT. I suggest that when you get as far as setting a time and a date, you do it by PM, or even email. (Some of us know each other's email addresses.) I would certainly love to come if I can make it work, but an evening thing in London isn't the easiest thing for me to manage logistically because I would have to arrange a sleepover for my kids with somebody.

Interesting. That set me wondering how hot domestic house fires generally get. I found this article.

Of interest is the maximum value which is fairly regularly found. This value turns out to be around 1200°C

So a steel safe should stay intact. What temperature the inside of the safe would reach is another question, though, and I've no idea about that.
