Spirit, PM me if you are interested, but I have a very good dentist who you can call up and check whether your DH's quote is fair. He specialises in implants and tricky work. I have a lot on over the next couple of days so may not be around to pick up PMs, so may not be able to answer straight away, but if you're interested I'll be happy to pass on details. He's in Herts, so probably too far, however he did say that there are so many dentists in London and M25 there is more price competition up here.

Thank you Viva. I wish I could take you up on this kind offer.

I spoke to my husband as you had said this before (When I thought £8000 was a lot) and he just wants to proceed now that he has plucked up the courage to have it done. He is going to the Dentist in the village, I have no idea if he specialises in anything . If we were spending £15000 on anything else we would shop around a bit....but I think his courage has failed him to even consider another Dentist. As I said in my post..I am having grumpy thoughts but keeping them to myself.

This is a big sum to us.:(

Conversely, are you suggesting someone should get a blue badge or similar when they only have that need for one day a month?:)

Yes, because they need a badge some of the time, and it's up to them how honest they are about using it.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I'm assuming that this is something big like Titanium implants. Whilst the dentist you have may be very good, you can reasonably get alternative quotes for the work. It's fair to do that, and you can always discuss it with your existing dentist before/after getting the quotes. He may suddenly decide that he can shave £5k off his fees, who knows?

£15k is a fairly sizeable chunk of dosh, and you'd never get house-building work of that value done without getting alternative quotes. So, just because it's teeth-building, why are things different?

Because the "builder" will be working inside his mouth and Mr S is not in amoney saving frame of mind about this. I, unfortunately, am.

Looking at it from the pop of mr spirits nerves....are you money saving to the point of thinking that false teeth would be a better situation from your standpoint?

It's a HUGE amount of money, but if he is really terrified (rather than lazy) then perhaps its justifiable? For me expertise wins out over local every single time for big things though.

I dare not even mention it now...a little gentle discussion about an hour ago went down like a rat sandwich. I have not got the heart to say "Oh get a grip" . He looked so scared and miserable and that is not my style.

If it was £15K or dentures I would say just pay it..but what is in my mind is that it might be possible to get this done for a lot less.

I guess I will never know.

Poor chap. I understand the fear.

Personally, I don't mind dentists. They do things. The only reason I haven't seen a dentist in a while is the cost. I need something done to my teeth...two dentists have said two things but its most likely to be a veneer....I have a dead front tooth and its starting to discolour....it's not grotesque yet, or I would have done it. When they first said I needed to do it for cosmetic reasons it was almost the life time of a veneer (I have been told to budget for them ten yearly...this is staggering to me,...no one else in my family has any such thing so I am naive about the costs and upkeep). Anyway, I have saved us the cost of one lot. The end of that tooth is 'false' anyway, and has broken off a few times in the last ten years.

I want to get mine whitened to the colour of youth (why did they suddenly turn yellow in my thirties?) before having veneers or whatever done too, but paying for that seems a little vain.

I had 'American teeth' as a small child and I have destroyed them pretty well. :o

Wow, quite a lot of debate.

Regarding the blue badge, the actual rules haven't been tightened. However what did come to light across the past 5 years, is that the largest level of fraud occurring in the UK, was blue badge fraud. The reasons? Well, firstly, it means people don't have to pay parking fees, 2nd, it opens doors to other benefits, and 3rd, people can park almost anywhere. As a result, LA's have started scrutinising applications a lot more.
Thing is, they were brought in with good intentions, & then sadly got abused by so many. The rules are not as specific as they are for other disability benefits, hence there is more scope for grey areas.

My tip would be - your condition fluctuates, as do most conditions. Therefore your needs will vary. For example, when you're very very poorly, as an ememrgency you may need an urgent prescription. Therefore DH could use the blue badge to go fetch this (with you staying at home - you don't have to be present, merely the journey has to be for you). When not very very poorly, you will try to get out & about, but there are barriers you face. It is also worth mentioning things you would do that you currently cannot do (ie show the benefits getting the blue badge would bring).
In addition, as DH is frequently away or even abroad, I would mention this, as you have to maintain a level of independence on weekdays.

Speaking as someone who briefly worked in a team which assessed blue badge applications, it is a known fact that applicants generally focus on the "worst day" scenario. Such applications tend to be selected for further investigation, as health professionals know conditions fluctuate, & are not always the same.

A blue badge on its own does not open doors to other benefits.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Well, OH says it's Israeli food - something Isaac asked, loudly, in there, apparently.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

    Lol,

    Still looks good.

And it's a decent location for some of the others too. Hmm. Thanks ndg. It think what I might do is get a consensus from attendees. I usually prefer to just decide myself :D.
