  • :j I actually managed to make some progress today I spent 30 minutes sorting clutter in the kitchen and I have thrown out 2 bags of bits and pieces (really just rubbish no idea why I ever had it in the first place to be honest):j

DKtreesea- the interest is an interesting way to look at it and what I do. I look at the price and think well if I keep it for 3 years I will use money that could have paid off a credit card or mortgage. So instead of being something at £1 is it something at £1 plus 3 years interest at XXX etc

I also think well if I sell something for £1 it is not £1 but £1 to pay off xx and save yyy I interest.

Hit a bit of a wall today, found a box of old payslips (2001-2009)
Managed to throw most out (I am shredding them first don't worry) but these things bothered me:
    1. Why had I been keeping them all this time and thought that was normal?
    2. what do non-hoarders do with these, do they have a system for when to throw them out? These are things I need to know and learn.
    3. why do I have to look through EVERY SINGLE ONE before I can throw it out...and when I try not to I feel panicky. I felt the fear and did it anyway and I am fine-of course, but this is not a normal feeling!
    4. Why have I kept some to go through again later, why can't I do the whole lot in one go? I always get tired or distracted and lose my ability to 'filter/focus'
I know I'm beating myself up about this a bit but I do get frustrated about these behaviour patterns, will they ever change? How does everyone else feel?
    Don't turn a slip up into a give up:D

    1. Why had I been keeping them all this time and thought that was normal? well from now on, you know it isn't necessary so you won't: in 10 yr you won't be finding a box of the last 10 yrs.
    2. what do non-hoarders do with these, do they have a system for when to throw them out? These are things I need to know and learn. I keep my payslips til I receive my P60 in early May that summarises the previous years earning. I keep the p60's for 7 years as I have to file annual tax return that that is the recommended time. At the beginning of every new tax year I can chuck out the envelope of paperwork for the tax year 7 years previous.
    3. why do I have to look through EVERY SINGLE ONE before I can throw it out...and when I try not to I feel panicky. I felt the fear and did it anyway and I am fine-of course, but this is not a normal feeling! Well I would say it's your inbuilt need to be sure about paper work you chuck - and there is a level of sense in that. Well done for feeling the fear and doing it anyway - keep doing that and in time the feeling may well lesson but may be not go completely as it is part of who you are.
    4. Why have I kept some to go through again later, why can't I do the whole lot in one go? I always get tired or distracted and lose my ability to 'filter/focus'. Maybe accept this is how you operate, and that that is ok - that you can do a certain amount before resistance/fatigue over take. This is key to successful decluttering - recognise its sensible to stop when you get tired or distracted. Little and often may suit you better. Most people can ony keep going for a while, or need to change to another task for a while.
I know I'm beating myself up about this a bit but I do get frustrated about these behaviour patterns, will they ever change? How does everyone else feel?
I'd say, stop beating yourself up - look at what you have achieved - major breakthrough in getting rid of a lot of payslips and the determination to break this pattern:T

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once ......so it's not just me this happens too!!!! That's good to know.:)

suzitiger - I get frustrated at my own 'behaviour' sometimes too. I can 'see' the rational way of doing things, but I have to do things my way even if it takes longer as otherwise I am overwhelmed by anxietystress/whatever, and then I stop altogether. So every little step is a step forward and the lovely people on this thread have an understanding of how difficult some 'little' steps are. ( one little step for 'normal' folk can be a giant leap for a Roundtuit type folk!)

Paid work and AF have just about floored me this week - but I am staying on top of the recycling and I'll be decluttering a little more this weekend.

    Good Morning

When I came down this morning I brought with me a piece of sandpaper and a belt from DS's school trousers - made of cardboard?!? - both of which were on my bedroom floor behind the ottoman (don't ask ) and BINNED them :T . (DS is 20)Might I add that this was before I'd even had my first :coffee:!!!
    Let the weekend begin :)

    Have a good one

DH took the recycling yesterday, which always feels good to get out of the house.

My washing machine keeps getting blocked and stopping mid cycle. We know what the problem is (my fault!) and keep clearing it but it is a pain. What it has shown though is how crucial getting clothes clean and put away regularly helps in the clutter management.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

2 binbags and a prom dress tootled out to DD1's yesterday.. the space was immediately filled with DD2's prom dress and a binbag of new school uniform for September.. There is something very wrong at play in here!

She is sorting all the baby stuff ready to return on Friday so I need to make a whole mountain of space for that little lot.

I also have a wheelie bin to fill.. and still haven't got the boxes in the cupboard/loft like they need to be.
