Hoarding - Springing Ahead

  • Am now beginning to have bad dreams about being overwhelmed with stuff - and yet I spent money on, & brought home, a spinning wheel in distress! In my defence, I shall be able to make a healthy profit on it, as it's a good working wheel by a respectable maker, but it's taking up space whilst I get it ready for sale...

In the meantime, I've Freecycled one of my working treadle sewing machines; that'll gain me a bit more space back, and I have three large items waiting to go on Ebay, which needs to be done at the right moment for them to finish when people are available to bid. I'm refusing to allow myself to buy more stock in until the current logjam is a thing of the past, and am working on my personal possessions too; my wardrobe's shrinking, but with a bit more thought than last time, when I ended up donating all my best winter dresses as I hadn't worn them for a while. This time I'll allow myself to keep a few things in reserve. DS3 has now trotted off to France for 8 months so I must make the best of the time that I have a room free for, and get sorted. Instead of sitting here, reading my life away & making promises...

    :) Morning all.

Well, the bagful of library books is back in the library, a book from the read-and-donate shelf was finished last night and is now the kernel of the next donation bag, and the recycling and rubbish-rubbish (about one small carrier bag's worth per week) will go out this morning.

I made it in and out of the rec yard by applying a form of neck-lock to myself, similar to that which I have to deploy in Lakelund. Do not look at anything other than what I need, or there will be trouble and mass leaking of money from the wallet. Their slabs are £2 each and I shall pick up two later this morning when the parents come up in their car.

Dad and I have decided we will ask Mum to remain in the car whilst we fetch the slabs. She is a woman of many interests and the rec yard has a lot of stuff which is interesting to a woodworker, and best not put her in way of temptation............:rotfl:She may not consent, of course.

Kid Bruv has donated the boots and books which I badgered him about by email and has turned a 50p book I bought on his behalf last month into a £45 internet sale.......... Dad jokes that Bruv and I take after one of our great-grandads who was a bit of a one for the buying and selling.

Did one of my outstanding mending chores, which is a first - I sides-to-middled a terrycloth teatowel which was going a bit bald in the middle. Is now in good nick and fit for more dish-wiping.

Drat, I suppose that means I have no excuses for not doing the washing up now, hey? *sigh*

  • Aaaaargh! This is going to have to get serious... DS1 has just phoned up and asked whether he can bring his American girlfriend home for Christmas... I cannot possibly let an innocent member of another nation, possibly one day to be a new member of our family, see the chaos we normally live in!

So I've got three months... I'll need to start tomorrow!

Thriftwizard - you need a cunning plan! Break it all down into small achievable pieces (elephant theory here!) You have 2 months, 8 weeks or 56 days! I've not counted December 'cos there's too many other things going on. Go girl - you can do it!

Good luck, thriftwizard. Quite some inspiration to get going.

DD leaves for uni tomorrow

There are two positives for my house

All the stuff that is currently cluttering up spare bedroom, conservatory and kitchen will depart - assuming we can get it all in the car
and I can get my hands on her not-as-empty-as-it-could-be bedroom

She is in halls for two years so it shouldn't be darkening our doorway again for some time yet

Regrettably the bank account has also been rather decluttered
I wanna be in the room where it happens

We were away in the caravan last weekend and as its been a repository for items that were no longer needed/replaced indoors over the years I decided to have a declutter there too. SO home came half a dozen dessert spoons & forks, two fluffy toys (??) a complete extra set of Arcopal  thats going on the bay of E or somwhere AND a macrame 'thingy' from the Land of Lake for lifting pudding basins out of steamers - still in its original packaging - where/when was I ever going to use that in a caravan & where it came from nobody knows but I know where its going! - Oh - and a couple or three of books. I think I am starting to apply my clothes buying mantra to decluttering. Love it Madly, Need it Badly or Forget it!

  • Hi there, people.

Not sure if I count as a hoarder because it's not so much us (myself and my mother living at home) but our house has sunk under a tide of clutter and stuff from other sources. Most of this is due to my mother's recent renovation of our house (why she didn't use boxes and hire a storage unit at the beginning instead of using reusable bags for life and moving them from room to >.> I don't know) but also the recent death of my grandfather, which meant the entire contents of a three bed house had to be disposed of quickly.

Consequently.... it ended up... here. At home. In a bungalow. Most of it, at least.

Combined with ill health on both of our parts (mine mental, mother's physical), mother working full time, and the job is pretty immense/overwhelming. :(

Figured this place was as close as I could find to the "I'm not a hoarder but the clutter is burying me anyway!" board :P

Today, I did a few small steps in the right direction -

    - I dumped several old tea towels that were too scratty for use because I did laundry
    - found some pillow cases to send to the charity shop by doing the same thing
    - sorted an old penpot with stuff in it from seven years ago! Got rid of the pot and THIRTY THREE old, broken, or horrible pens.

I hope everybody else had a reasonably productive day :D

  • Well done with the pens etc, RadioHorse - I might just get competitive here & see how many dead pens I can find & dispose of too, as there's never a working one when (or where) I need one! Have had a busy day elsewhere, so the Cunning Plan will start tomorrow. Probably with de-penning...
