  • I've also been charged £78 by match.com today via automatic renewal. My subscription in May was for 6 months. I don't understand why they must take it upon themselves to automatically renew my subscription. I successfully got a refund by stating the guidance from Ofcom re automatic renewals.
    Which is what?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • I realize that this post maybe old news, but I thought I would share how I got my refund.

Like everyone else I was taken on the subscription renewal and shocked to see the $200+ charge. I called up Match.com and after 20 minutes I got no where. But I did notify the representative that if they would not issue a refund I would report to my credit card of the unauthorized charge. The rep stated, "If I do that I would be forever banned from Match.com." So that is how it is done, to get a refund you have to accept being banned.

Here is the deal. If you were not aware you were buying a service that will continue to charge you then it is an unauthorized charge on a credit card. If you the consumer were not aware of the charge, how could it been authorized. You were not aware, and also entitled to a reasonable refund or the right to file a fraudulent charge. Visa and Mastercard terms with any merchant says consumers are not responsible for fraudulent charges. Also a contract was never physically signed by either party, so good luck with a court settlement. Match.com has no recourse on an unauthorized charge. And if enough people claim fraud they will eventually be investigated for fraud which is what they are doing.

Go to your credit card company and claim fraud. They will investigate and you will win. Most banks won't even take the time to investigate, they just take back the charge. Then it's up to Match to prove the charge. They can't because you claimed fraud. Remember they do not know it was you that agreed, this is all through the internet. Your charge will be refunded, and you walk away sticking it to Match.com and rightfully getting back your hard earned money. And when enough people do it, Match.com's bank will get involved and hit them with additional fees for all the fraudulent crap they pull.

Yes I am banned from Match.com, but somehow I don't miss them now I got my money back.
  • So lie, is what you are suggesting?

How? There's massive writing with the charges before you enter your credit card details, I've just tried it myself and have seen it.

Fraud isn't classified as not reading things which is blatantly what the problem actually is.

    $200 ?

They charge you in US dollars?

Or are you a USA resident so your post has no relevance to this UK forum?

No, they said if you lie and say it was unauthorised then they would ban you. Fair enough for me. Why would a business want to deal with someone who incorrectly tells their card issuer they have been a victim of fraud?

If you wish to contact Match.com's customer service for any of your issue try this number (0870 174 ****). It will directly connect you with the right person.
Since 13 June 2014, Regulation 41 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 requires an 01, 02, 03 or 080 number for post-sales enquiries.

Usage of premium rate 084, 087 & 09 numbers was effectively banned.

The above number is not an official number for Match.com. It is a Call Connection Service run by a third-party. It's a premium rate number with a 13p per minute Service Charge which goes to the connection service. Calls to this number cost up to 25p per minute from landlines or up to 58p per minute from mobiles. Calls to the official number will be inclusive from landlines and from mobiles, else charged at 'geographic rate'.

  • Hello,

I subscribed to Match.com last August, and forgot about it so that in January this year the 6-month auto-renewal occurred (and £119(ish) was taken from my PayPal account...).

Anyway, I thought this was expensive, and did not want it to happen again so cancelled the subscription auto-renewal in Feb/March (in good time - before I forgot)... So now my subscription has finished, and obviously the service has become limited... Also I am getting information about taking out a 6-month subscription for £60(ish) with auto-renewal...

My problem is (and I probably should have looked into this in more detail back in Jan), why did they not charge me the £60 renewal fee (instead of twice as much)... The £60 was discounted (the longer - 6 month period was cheaper), but all I have subsequently read on/in there add is that the renewal should of been at this same price?).

    Any thoughts/advice please,

    Thanks, Dave :)...
    Hi guys,

I could use some advice. Match.com has just taken £77 from my account and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get it back. They've automatically renewed my subscription and I thought it would just end when the subscription finished.

This has happened today and I'm wondering if it is covered by the distance selling regulations? ie. that if the service hasnt been used I'm allow to cancel it within the first 7 days and a get refund? I have used it when I subscribed originally 6 months ago but I havent used it since its been renewed.

Is there anything I can do?
