Hysterically funny crime books - Carl Hiassen
Gripping (but sadly short) Crime / Thriller books - Dennis Lehane

    Both excellent authors! (I don't do chick-lit, sorry! ;))

Almost all of my faves have been mentioned but one that you just have to read if you haven't is "Man and Boy" by Tony Parsons, I've read it about 4-5 times and i NEVER read anything more than once.....every time it makes me laugh and every single time I have a good cry!

She's not for everyone but i'd recommend anything by martina cole, now that woman can write!
'Faceless' is a very good one, it's 650 pages and i read it in 2 nights.
I'm halfway through 'dangerous lady' which i cant wait to finish but have to wait till i'm at work tommorrow night!

I agree she's ace isn't she?! I have read all her books. I did hear that theres another female writer that has a similar gritty style, anybody know her name?

. I quite like non-fiction so I've just finished Bill Bryson "Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid" about his childhood in 50's America, which was really good. He's such a good author.

I agree- it's laugh out loud in places, and a lovely look at what it was like to grow up in a fully functional family with no really big issues- a joyful book!

    Hi guys,

I second Martina Cole too, read all her books and couldn't put them down, waiting for the new one in October. Also second Jane Green with 'Mr Maybe' and 'Jamima J' Light hearted and funny but still kept me up all night reading. Tony Parsons is brilliant, especially Man & Boy, and Nick Hornby too.

I haven't read for ages and i am now going to have to dig out my unread books and get cracking.

Another great read is a book called 'Scardy Cat; but i can't remember who its by, but his other books are equally as good, sort of crime book but again brilliant. I also like James Patterson books.

    Enjoy,

oh my goodness, so many of my fave books are mentioned here, but I also like Diana Gabaldon, the outlander novels, starting with "Cross Stitch"
"Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first woman she meets and then teams up with three complete stangers to kill again."

I really enjoyed Bill Bryson's The Thunderbolt Kid. I liked it so much I bought another 5 of his books from eBay. (I buy loads of books but dh works abroad for 5 weeks at a time and I wouldn't trust him to take a library book back home with him!)
  • Just wanted to make a recommendation for some non fiction.

I have read all but one of Torey Hayden's books, and find them fascinating and a really good read.

  • I am loving this post!

    I adore:

    PJ Tracy
the Harry Potter series (and will buy the last one - next month!!!!!!!!!)
    Patricia Scanlan
    Agatha Christie
    Rosamund Pilcher

I have loved Jilly Cooper. I don't really like Martine Cole but I do like a good plausible crime with a twist.

I have started reading biographies - Katie Price (Jordan) was very good and I also read one of the million books about Lady Diana which was also good.

Cathy Kelly - also good. James Patterson was okm until all the bad guys were cops and predictable. well all the ones I read!

Jeffrey Archer - good, Alex Garland............I could go on and on!
If you wait for perfect conditions, nothing would ever get done! :T
    I'm not short - I'm condensed awesome! :p
